Hello,

Sorry if this is a repeat post, thought I would try the forum.

I primarily translate scanned medical records, letters from insurance companies, etc. Recently, I've noticed a lot of repeated content (most if not all letters from insurance companies are generic). I would love to have a TM to make the work easier, but, like I mentioned, I pretty much only work with scanned documents.

Does anyone have any recommendations for establishing a TM with this type of file? Or, is my only solution looking through previous projects until I find matching content.

Thanks!

Convert the documents you are asked to translate (which I assume are sent to you as PDFs) into e.g. .docx, using a good converter. IMO, the best is currently: https://www.abbyy.com/en-gb/finereader/

Then, translate these .docx files with a CAT tool, which will allow you to build up a TM.

If you have a bunch of documents you already translated, you can use ABBYY FineReader + an aligner to create a TM. The best free one is currently LF Aligner (https://sourceforge.net/projects/aligner/ ).

Good luck!

If you need to align, you coud also try the free alignassist (http://felix-cat.com/tools/align-assist/). Its easy to use and seems to work fine.

Just convert your scanned files to an editable format. OCR is not perfect but works pretty well. Create a new TM and start translating your converted files.

ABBY finereader (or what is its current name) does not always recognize scanned texts. If you have a steady flow of medical and legal texts, it is worth to try Wondershare: https://www.wondershare.com. It's a paid software and not very cheap but it is worth every penny as it converts every scanned text other than handwritten ones.
