Winter, Ten Bruggen Kate
Ik was beslist geen miljonair maar heb wel altijd als miljonair geleefd.
Dit is de gevleugelde uitspraak van Chris ten Bruggen Kate, kunstenaar, levenskunstenaar en schilder. Het geeft iets aan over de manier waarop hij denkt en voelt. Hij is een mens van gevoel, sfeer, stemming en vooral mystiek.
Inleiding
Chris kende ik vanuit mijn jeugd. Als jongetje, leerde ik zeilen van Jos Lussenburg, destijds de nestor van de Nunspeetse schilderskring. Bij Jos thuis in de ‘Thuishaven’ leerde ik knopen en de inhoud van het Binnenaanvaringsreglement. Het was daar dat ik voor het eerst in contact kwam met 24 jaar oudere Chris ten Bruggen Kate en vooral ook met kunst. Het werk dat ze maakten intrigeerde me, al was dat totaal verschillend. Evenzo de kunstenaars. Jos was voor mij een oude wijze man, een echte mentor waarbij je je thuis voelde en die ook prachtige schilderijen maakte over de Zuiderzee. Chris etaleerde zich als kunstenaar, hij gedroeg zich er naar. Dat kon je zien aan zijn houding, wat hij deed, hoe hij zich kleedde, en vooral de manier waarop hij met het andere geslacht om ging. Ik keek tegen hem op; de grote sterke man die de hele wereld in zijn zak leek te hebben. Hij voelde natuurlijk zijn superioriteit, al was het alleen maar door zijn leeftijd. Alles waar je in geloofde en voor stond moest kunnen. Het klikte.
Ik was opgevoed met gezag, orde en netheid, de grote schoonmaak enz. Zijn atelier was het einde. Alles lag door elkaar, overal hing, stond of lag wat en nergens was het schoon. Temidden van alles en vlak bij het grote raam stond een ezel met alleen een beetje ruimte voor de schilder. Naast de kunstschilder was Chris de man van de anekdotes. Hij wist me te boeien met spannende verhalen en onverwachte wendingen en vooral zijn levenskunst.
Pas heel veel later ben ik notities gaan maken over de anekdotes die hij vertelde en gesprekken die we voerden. Deze biografie is gebaseerd op mijn persoonlijke herinneringen, aangevuld en gecorrigeerd door Chris en Lenie.
Emotie.
Wie voor een schilderij van Ten Bruggen Kate staat, ondergaat een bijzondere emotie.
Waardoor dat precies komt is moeilijk te zeggen. Het meest in het oog springend zijn de verlopende, een beetje onrealistische, kleuren en de strakke lijnen. Bijna altijd is er sprake van het al door Oude meesters gehanteerde principe ‘clair-obscur’. Er wordt spanning opgebouwd met licht, vooral de contrasten tussen licht en donker. Ten Bruggen Kate laat met lichtval meestal lange schaduwen ontstaan en altijd is er volop ‘stilte’ en ruimte in zijn doeken. Waarschijnlijk is het juist de uitgebalanceerde samenhang van die elementen die maakt dat je het schilderij niet alleen ziet maar het ook ´beleeft´. Het kijken naar zijn werk wekt een mystieke spanning op. Zijn schilderijen zijn ‘glad’ geschilderd en hij hanteert een ragfijne penseelvoering.
Het werk van Ten bruggen Kate doen mij vaak denken aan het verhaal van een Amerikaanse journalist die, werkend in India, in de krant las dat er in Nederland een ijstocht zou worden gereden van 200 kilometer op één dag.
Voor een Amerikaan, die alleen maar kunst- en ijshockeyschaatsen kende, leek dit een schier onmogelijke opgaaf. Hij besloot onmiddellijk naar Nederland te vliegen om dat geweldige evenement, de elfstedentocht, te kunnen meemaken en te verslaan.
Toen hij, voor het eerst van zijn leven, in Nederland was en in alle vroegte met een Nederlandse collega (op ijshockeyschaatsen) een stukje Elfstedentocht reed deed hij een merkwaardige ontdekking. Hij zag uit de ochtendnevel af en toe imposante puntvormige gevaartes opdoemen en sprak tegenover zijn maat zijn verwondering uit over het feit dat er kennelijk in Nederland ook piramides bestonden. De Friese boerderijen met hun hoge puntdaken, mysterieus opdoemend uit de ochtendnevel, gaven men een indruk van ingehouden spanning en mystiek en deden hem denken aan de piramides in het verre Egypte.
Deze sfeer, die van dat uitgestrekte puur Hollandse landschap waar de kou de lijnen recht maakt, roept ook het werk van Ten Bruggen Kate op. Chris is altijd gek op de winter geweest. Bij sneeuw, ijs en kou was hij in zijn element. Veel van zijn werk straalt onderkoelde wijdsheid uit tegenover de warmte die voortkomt uit de kneuterigheid van het puur Gelderse landschap, datgene wat hem zo lief is.
Als enthousiast schaatser kan ik dat zo goed invoelen. Als je ’s morgens vroeg bij min 10 graden over een spiegelglad Veluwemeer in de richting Harderwijk of Elburg suist, dan beleef je wat Chris vastlegt in zijn doeken. De stilte is overweldigend, je hoort bijna het ijs onder je ijzer smelten. Als je naar opzij kijkt, naar de ijzige kustlijn op afstand met de contouren van koude bosjes en hier en daar een boerderij, wordt de horizon vereenvoudigd tot een schilderij van Chris.
Zelfs de enkele boom die je dan ziet lijkt zo weggewandeld te zijn uit een schilderij van Ten Bruggen Kate. Ze zijn kaal, reiken slank naar de meestal strakblauwe hemel, en het lijkt of de schepper het aantal takken gemaximaliseerd is tot enkele per boom.
Chris zegt hierover: ’In mijn schilderijen kun je urenlang wandelen, genieten van de ruimte en de stille pracht!’.
Eens is, deze hem kenmerkende schilderstijl, ´gestileerd realisme´ genoemd maar ik vraag mij af of dit een naam moet hebben. Als er al een etiket geplaatst zou moeten worden, het lijkt wel of dat onvermijdelijk is in deze tijd, lijkt mij ‘reducerend-realisme’ beter passen. Reducerend omdat al het overbodige, alle franje, uit het beeld is weggelaten of is teruggebracht tot zijn meritus.
Zijn stijl is echter zo geheel ‘eigen’ dat er eigenlijk geen etiket op past.
Bovendien is ‘stileren’ niet zijn doel. Zelf zegt Ten Bruggen Kate hierover: ‘Eigenlijk schilder ik het landschap zoals het idealiter zou moeten zijn, ik laat de vormen zoals ze zijn, combineer dingen die in mijn kop zitten en al het overbodige laat ik weg’.
Maar er is méér. Door het Clair-Obscur met vaak donkere luchten gaat er soms dreiging uit van zijn doeken. Door het eenzijdige licht, worden er een aantal basale vormen extra geaccentueerd.
Ineens realiseer je je, net als die onbevooroordeelde Amerikaan in Friesland, dat die vormen eigenlijk heel mooi en functioneel zijn.

“I certainly was no millionaire, but I have always lived like one.”
This familiar saying of Chris ten Bruggen Kate, artist, painter and master of the art of living, says a lot about the way he thought and felt. He was a man of feeling, atmosphere, mood, and above all, mystique.
Introduction
I knew Chris since my childhood. As a boy I learned to sail from Jos Lussenburg, who was at that time the “grand old man” of the Nunspeet painters’ circle. At Jos’s home, “Thuishaven” (“Home Port”), I learned the Inland Waterway Regulations and how to tie knots. It was there that I first met the 24-year older Chris ten Bruggen Kate. More importantly, it was there that I first discovered art. The works of both men intrigued me, even though the paintings of one were entirely different from those of the other, just as the artists themselves were completely different from each other. To me, Jos was a wise old man who made beautiful paintings of the Zuiderzee, a true mentor with whom I felt at home, while Chris presented himself as an Artist, and behaved like one. You could see it in his attitude, his behavior, his clothing, and particularly in the way he approached the opposite sex. I looked up to him as the big strong man who had the world in his pocket. Naturally, if only because of his age, he felt superior to me. With Chris, I felt anything and everything was possible. Despite the differences in our ages and background, there was an immediate click between us.
I had been raised to respect authority, to believe that cleanliness was next to godliness, and that there was a place for everything and everything should be in its place. Chris’s studio was something else. What wasn’t piled in heaps on the floor, hung where it had been flung, and the concept of cleanliness seemed unknown. In the middle of everything, near the large window, stood an easel with only enough room in front of it for the painter.
As well as a painter, Chris was a great story teller and he entertained me with his exciting stories full of unexpected twists and turns and especially his art of living.
It was not until later in our friendship that I began to write down our conversations and the anecdotes he told. This biography is based on my personal memories, supplemented and corrected by Chris and Lenie.
Chris lived until the age of 82, and died on May 6, 2003. He was one of the last of the illustrious Nunspeet painters’ circle.
Emotion
Standing in front of a ten Bruggen Kate painting, you experience an extraordinary emotion. It is not easy to say precisely what causes that. The most remarkable features of a ten Bruggen Kate painting are the almost unreal colors and the precise straight lines. Chiaroscuro, a technique often used by the Old Masters, is almost always used. A tension is built up through the use of light, particularly the contrast between light and dark. Ten Bruggen Kate often used light to create long shadows and there is always a feeling of deep stillness and almost infinite space. It is perhaps just because of the balanced relationship between these elements that you not only see but experience the painting. Looking at his work awakens a mystical tension within the viewer.
Technical features include Ten Bruggen Kate's gossamer-fine brushwork and the flawlessly smooth surface of his paintings.
Ten Bruggen Kate's work reminds me of the story about an American journalist who, while working in India, read in the newspaper about an ice-skating "hike" of 200 km to be held in the Netherlands. In one day. For an American, familiar only with exhibition ice skating and ice hockey, this appeared to be an all but impossible task, and he decided to fly to the Netherlands immediately to participate.
When, for the first time in his life, he was in the Netherlands, skating (on ice hockey skates) in the Elfstedentocht in the early morning with a Dutch colleague, he made a remarkable discovery. Every once in a while, off in the distance, he saw huge pointed shapes looming up through the morning mist. He told skating mate he was amazed to find that apparently pyramids existed in the Netherlands. These "pyramids,” of course, were Frisian farm buildings that, seen through the early-morning fog, created an impression of awe and mystery, reminiscent of the pyramids in faraway Egypt.
This vast pure Dutch landscape where the cold seems to make the lines straighter calls to mind Ten Bruggen Kate's work. Chris was always crazy about winter. He was in his element in snow, ice and cold. Much of his work radiates an understated cold vastness rather than the warmth coziness of the pure Gelderland landscape, that he loved so much.
As an enthusiastic skater I can identify with that feeling. Whizzing over a mirror-smooth Veluwemeer early on a below-freezing morning, headed toward Harderwijk or Elburg, you experience what Chris captured in his winter paintings. The silence is so overwhelming that you can almost hear the ice melt under your blades. As you look to the side, towards the icy coast line with the contours of frozen forests and here and there a farm, the horizon is reduced to a ten Bruggen Kate painting. Even the trees look as if they are straight out of a ten Bruggen Kate painting. Bare and lean, they stretch toward the generally clear blue sky, and appear as if the Creator allotted only a few branches per tree.
Chris said: “In my paintings you can wander for hours, enjoying the space and the silent beauty.”
Art critic Ed Wingen once described ten Bruggen Kate’s characteristic style as “stylized realism” (“gestileerd realism"), but I wonder if it is actually necessary to define his style. It is so entirely his own that it cannot be labelled. However, if a label must be placed on his style, and it seems unavoidable in these times, I think "minimal realism" is more accurate. Minimal because whatever is superfluous is omitted or reduced to its essence.
Moreover, it was not his intention to “stylize”. Ten Bruggen Kate himself said: "Actually I paint the landscape as it should be ideally; I leave the shapes as they are, combine them with things that sit in my head and delete everything that is superfluous."
But that is not all.
Through the use of chiaroscuro, often with dark skies, his paintings seem to emanate a sense of threat or danger. Basic shapes are accented by a single source of light.
Suddenly you realize, just as did the unsuspecting American in Friesland, that the forms are actually very beautiful and serve a purpose.

XXX is het internationaal literatuurhuis van Brussel. De letteren staan er centraal. Het is een ontmoetingsplek voor literatuurliefhebbers en literatuurmakers, een ruimte waar de banden tussen Nederlandstalige, Franstalige en anderstalige literaturen worden aangehaald.
XXXX opende zijn deuren in oktober 2004. Het huis omvat een literair podium, een meertalige boekhandel, een ruimte voor workshops, een kleine galerie, kantoorruimten en een appartement voor schrijvers en vertalers in residentie.
Literatuurhuis XXX stelt zijn infrastructuur en technische voorzieningen ter beschikking van organisaties die literaire programma’s presenteren. De vaste partners zijn de literaire verenigingen XXX en XXX.
Maar XXX is méér dan een faciliteitenverstrekkende instelling die de deuren opent voor derden. Het wil in letterenlandschap ook een sterke inhoudelijke rol spelen.
XXX ziet zichzelf als een enabling environment die motiveert, impulsen geeft, kansen creëert en aanstuurt op verandering en vernieuwing. Het is een laboratorium voor uitwisseling en internationalisering van de literatuur. Het zet literaire actoren aan tot een meertalige of taalgrensoverschrijdende programmering. XXX wil schrijvers en vertalers ook de mogelijkheid bieden hun talent uit te diepen, hun deskundigheid te vergroten, hun werk te verrijken. XXX is duidelijk ook een werkplaats.

XXXX werd opgericht in 1998, XXXX in 2004.
De derde partner, de XXX Bookshop, is een selectieve meertalige boekhandel die uitblinkt vooral uit door de kwaliteit en de meertaligheid en specificiteit van het aanbod. Hoewel hij rentabiliteit nastreeft, houdt deze boekhandel rekening met méér dan het zuivere winstprincipe.
In horen de verschillende genres thuis: poëzie, proza en essays. Ook de kinder- -en jeugdliteratuur is er vertegenwoordigd.
De XXX Bookshop is een b.v.b.a. en draait zowel juridisch als economisch volkomen autonoom.

Literature is at the heart of XXX, Brussel’s international house of literature. XXX is a meeting place for lovers of literature as well as those who create literature, a space where the link between Dutch, French and foreign-language literature is reinforced.
XXX opened its doors in October 2004. The centre houses a literary podium, a multi-language bookstore, workshop and office space, a small gallery, and living quarters for writers and translators in residence.
The XXX House of Literature places its infrastructure and technical facilities at the disposal of organisations that organise and present literary events. XXX’s permanent partners are the literary associations, XXX and XXX.
But XXX is more than a institution that opens its doors and offers its facilities to third parties. XXX also wishes to play a strong role in the literary scene with respect to content.
XXX sees itself as an enabling environment that motivates, stimulates, creates opportunities, and leads to change and renewal. It is a laboratory for the exchange and internationalization of literature. It spurs those active in the literary world to multilingual or boundary-crossing productivity. XXX wishes to offer writers and translators the possibility to deepen their talent, increase their expertise and enrich their work. XXX is clearly also a work place.

XXX has three permanent partners: XXX, XXX and the XXX Bookshop
XXX and XXX are literary associations. They organise the majority of the literary programmes that take place at XXX, about 70 programmes per year. Five times a year they plan a program together.
XXX was established in 1998; XXX in 2004.
The third partner, the XXX Bookshop, is a selective multilingual book store that stands out especially because of the quality and distinction of the books it offers in several languages. Although it strives for profitability, this bookstore considers more than merely the pure profit principle.
Poetry, prose and essays have their place here. Children’s and young people’s literature also are represented.
The XXX Bookshop is a limited liability partnership and is legally as well as financially completely autonomous.

Was ik op zoek naar dit boek, of was het andersom?

Sinds de zomer van 2003 ben ik lid van BookCrossing. Het idee van het doorgeven en ruilen van boeken leerde ik al eerder kennen, namelijk in 2000 tijdens een acht maanden durende, avontuurlijke reis door Afrika. Ik ben onderweg meer dan eens op zoek geweest naar een mooi boek voor onder de klamboe, maar dat er ooit een boek op zoek naar mij zou gaan had ik niet gedacht.
Omdat ik op de motor onderweg was, kon ik niet veel meenemen, en meer dan één boek tegelijk zou te zwaar zijn; daarom ruilde ik mijn boek voor een ander, of gaf het weg als ik het uit had. Zo had ik onderweg steeds wat nieuws te lezen. En geloof me, het kan heerlijk zijn om zelfs tijdens zo'n prachtige reis even pauze te nemen, en even heel ergens anders te zijn door weg te duiken in een boek.
Het boek dat ik van huis meenam, was Kerewin van Keri Hulme; ik had het van een vriendin gekregen, die ook wel wist dat het niet meer mee terug zou komen, maar hoopte dat ik er onderweg van zou genieten. En dat deed ik, want ik vond het een prachtig boek. Ook mijn reisgenoot, die lang niet zo graag leest als ik, las het met plezier.
In Niger had ik het uit, en was het tijd om het weg te geven. Ik gaf het aan een aardige man die werkte op het Nederlandse consulaat. Of eigenlijk was zijn huis het consulaat.
Toen ik een paar weken lid was van BookCrossing, zag ik op de bookshelf van Nrrdgrrl een bekende naam terug. Kerewin! En het was nog niet gereleased. Ik vroeg of ik het mocht lezen en natuurlijk mocht dat. Nrrdgrrl en ik bedachten een mooi, omslachtig plan, dat inhield dat zij het boek zou neerleggen in een café waar mijn zwager vaak komt, en hij zou het dan voor me meenemen; als ik er zelf eerder kwam, was het natuurlijk ook goed.
Dit plan liep wat vertraging op, en in die tijd zag ik ineens op de Go Hunting-bladzijde dat er een boek was neergelegd in de bibliotheek in mijn stad, door iemand die aan het andere eind van het land woonde. Het is niet te geloven, maar het was Kerewin.
's Morgens dacht ik: laat maar, ik heb het te druk vandaag, ik wil niet helemaal de stad in, en ik krijg het toch binnenkort van Nrrdgrrl. 's Middags hield ik het niet meer uit en ik heb de motor gepakt en ben naar de bibliotheek gereden. Daar zocht ik alle rijden boeken af, op zoek naar een boek zonder sticker op z'n kont.
Het stond niet op zijn 'eigen' plek, maar ik zocht verder. En toen werd er omgeroepen dat het bijna vijf uur was, en werd iedereen verzocht naar de uitleenbalie te gaan. En nog voordat die boodschap ten einde was, vond ik het boek.
Het exemplaar van Nrrdgrrl heb ik ook nog gekregen. Mijn zwager had het meegenomen uit het café. Maar ik kreeg het niet meteen mee, want zijn vriendin was er in begonnen en ik kon het niet over mijn hart verkrijgen om het mee te nemen voordat ze het uit had. Het ligt nu hier, te wachten tot ik een goede vriend terugzie, aan wie ik het graag wil meegeven, omdat ik denk dat hij ervan zal genieten.
Ik heb het gevoel dat dit boek simpelweg naar mij op zoek was, hoe dan ook, en haast had om weer door mij gelezen te worden. Het opnieuw lezen was als het terugzien van een oude vriend, of een vertrouwde plaats.

I've been a BookCrosser since Summer 2003. I was already familiar with the idea of trading and passing on books from an adventurous 8-month journey I made through Africa in 2000. More than once on that trip I had tried to find a good book just right for reading under the mosquito net, but I never expected that a book would seek me out.
Traveling by motorcycle made it impossible to take much with me, certainly never more than one book at a time. Trading books with other travelers, or simply giving away a book when I finished it, allowed me to travel light yet still have new reading material. Believe me, it can be heavenly, even on such a wonderful trip, to take a break and be transported somewhere else for a while by a book.
I started out from home with Kerewin (The Bone People) by Keri Hulme. The book was given to me by a friend who knew very well the book would not be returning with me, but hoped only that I would enjoy it while travelling. And I did. It is a wonderful book. Even my travelling companion, no great reader himself, read it with pleasure.
We were in Niger when I finished the book, so I gave it to a kind man who worked at the Dutch consulate. Actually, his house WAS the consulate.
I had been a BookCrosser for only a few weeks, when I recognized a familiar name on nrrdgrrl's bookshelf. Kerewin! And it had not yet been released. I PM'd nrrdgrrl to ask if I could read it, and of course she agreed. We concocted a beautiful but roundabout plan wherein nrrdgrrl would leave the book in a cafe frequented by my brother-in-law and he would pick up the book and bring it to me. If I could get there before he did, all the better.
Executing our grand plan took somewhat longer than we had expected and in the meantime I saw on the "Go Hunting" page that someone who lived on the other side of the country had released a book at the public library in my city. Incredibly enough, it was Kerewin.
In the morning I thought, "Forget it. I've got too much to do today and I don't want to go all the way into town, and besides, sooner or later, I'll be getting the book from nrrdgrrl." However, come afternoon, I could no longer stand it, so I hopped on my motorcycle and rode to the library. There I looked through rows and rows of books, searching for one without a library sticker on its backside.
The book wasn't where it was supposed to be but I kept searching. Then came an announcement that it was nearly five o'clock, time for everyone to head to the check-out counter. Just as the announcement ended, I found the book.
Since then I've also received nrrdgrrl's copy. My brother-in-law picked it up at the cafe, but he didn't give it to me right away. ¶ PROOFREADING

The goal of proofreading is to make sure there are no errors in the edited final version of a text.
As a proofreader, I read an edited text to identify and correct typographical, punctuation and spelling errors and minor grammatical problems. The text is already well organized and understandable with easily correctable errors. It does not require rewriting or reorganization.
Some people refer to proofreading as checking, reviewing, or "fixing the English."
¶ EDITING
Basic Copy Editing
"Omit needless words." (Strunk & White, The Elements of Style)
As with proofreading, a basic copy edit will correct typographical, punctuation, spelling and minor grammatical errors, but goes further to correct word usage and sentence structure, clarify content and check internal consistency and basic formatting. Again, the text is already well written and organized, and requires no rewriting.
Some people refer to this as light editing or copy editing (also written "copyediting" or "copy-editing"), and again, as "fixing the English."
Intensive Editing

An intensive edit begins with a basic copy edit but is more extensive, dealing with the substance of the text as well as the words. I rework confusing and awkward writing and, if necessary, reorganize content and structure to achieve clarity of subject, logic and consistency.
Sometimes referred to as line editing, substantive, content or structural editing or moderate to heavy (copy) editing.
¶ TRANSLATING DUTCH TO ENGLISH

It is and I do.
Although my forte is polishing and improving English texts, I also translate competently and accurately from Dutch to English, at a certain level. If I think an assignment is beyond my capabilities, I will say so. Recent assignments include a children's book, advertising copy, newsletter articles, an employee manual, and website texts (see my portfolio for samples).
Believe me, I do end each project a different woman; every assignment presents new information and challenges that enrich me intellectually, making me an ever-better translator, editor and writer.

Yes, indeed it is. Translation is not merely exchanging a word in the target language for one in the source language. Nor is it only understanding the content of the source text. A good translation reliably transmits that content in a well-written final document. My writing and editing skills ensure a translation written in perfect English.

For editing and proofreading, I use Track Changes (MS Word), which allows you to see the changes I have made and then to accept or reject them.

¶ THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROOFREADING AND EDITING
I find that many people are confused about the difference between proofreading and editing and the various levels or types of editing.
The difference between proofreading and editing is mainly a matter of degree, with editing the more intensive process of the two. The term "proofreading" is often interpreted to mean "light editing" or indeed, any kind of editing, but editing is distinctly different from proofreading.
Briefly, proofreading is identifying and correcting typographical, spelling, and punctuation errors. Editing involves modifying a text to ensure that it is accurately written and makes sense to the reader. The basic distinction is that proofreading does not involve any rewriting of the text while editing does.
In practice, proofreading and editing overlap somewhat. Editing addresses proofreading but also focuses on word usage, sentence structure, content logic and writing style. An editor shows writers how to improve their writing so it is comprehensible, free of errors, and as well presented as possible. This goes far beyond merely checking for and correcting errors as in proofreading.
In my opinion and experience, an editor can proofread but a proofreader cannot necessarily edit. Proofreading requires not much more than a sharp eye and knowledge of spelling, punctuation and grammar. Editing demands command of the English language, excellent writing skills, and a broad range of knowledge, in addition to proofreading skills.
