Bio

I have been a full-time freelance translator since 1 October 2004, and I translate exclusively from Dutch to my native language, English. I am specialized in the translation of technical subject matter and have extensive knowledge of truck/automotive technology, industrial automation, computer hardware/software, building construction and traffic control systems. I also translate all kinds of related documents, including protocols, standards, procedures, test reports, white papers, tenders and correspondence. You can also come to me for revision of an existing Dutch-to-English translation and for proofreading/editing of text written in English (even if it wasn't written by a native speaker).

I work exclusively for translation agencies, large multinationals and colleges/universities. All translation work is carried out in the latest version of either SDL Trados Studio or Kilgray memoQ, whichever you prefer. I can also provide you with a bilingual terminology list or update a list you may already have.

Please feel free to contact me directly.

Until the fall of 2004, I worked as manager of the translation department at a technical documentation firm in the south of the Netherlands. During my last year with the company, I was responsible for 8 employees who handled projects totalling approximately 7.5 million words in 30 languages.

During the decade prior to beginning my career in the field of technical documentation and translation, I assisted with several home construction projects, worked for several years as a telecommunications network technician and spent seven years as an automotive technician, during which I gained the highest possible level of certification: ASE Master Automotive Technician and Advanced Engine Performance Specialist. All of this experience gives me extra insight into technical processes. On more than one occasion I have even been told that my English translation was more understandable than the original Dutch text!

During the first 8 years I worked as a freelancer my family and I lived in the Netherlands and I worked under the name Lowland Language Services V.O.F. In 2012 we emigrated to Sweden, and as of 1 October 2012 my wife and I established a new Swedish company: Torp Translations AB.

Projects I completed in a typical month:

Review of English brochure text for a network switch
Dutch to English translation of an installation manual for a hydraulically-controlled steerable truck axle
Dutch to English translation of a failure analysis report from an independent research organisation pertaining to an industrial process
Rewrite of an instruction sheet written in very poor English, provided with a consumer product made in China, so the document could be translated to Dutch and French
Proofreading and correction of the text for a company’s website written by one of its employees who is not a native speaker of English
Dutch to English translation of a 42 page installation and maintenance manual for a marine gearbox
Dutch to English translation of a website for a supplier of mechanical fasteners
Proofreading of and content-related suggestions for an English-language ‘services agreement’ written by a translation agency to formalise its expectations concerning the services provided by freelancers
Consulting for a translation agency that was having difficulty processing XML files using the SDL Trados 2007 Workbench and TagEditor
Dutch to English translation of a 40 page description of the manner in which projects are managed within an international organisation
Dutch to English translation of a series of tender specification documents from the Royal Netherlands Army for various articles of clothing
Dutch to English translation of a thank-you letter sent by a translation agency to all its clients and freelancers at the end of the year
British English to American English localisation of software strings for use in an automotive GPS navigation system
Flemish to British English translation of the rules for a promotional contest for a Belgian telecom provider
Dutch to English translation of the bi-monthly in-house newsletter for a multinational supplier of industrial process equipment to the oil and gas industry
Dutch to English translation of the website text for a manufacturer of products used for noise and sound insulation in power plants
Dutch to English translation of various updates to the website for an amusement park (various portions targeted at adults and others at children)
Dutch to American English translation of quality assurance procedures (50,000 words) for one of the world’s largest truck manufacturers
