English to French: Pope Francis: A New Era of “Mass” Transit? General field: Social Sciences
Source text - English It’s a season of firsts for the Catholic Church. Recently, the church saw the first resignation of a living pope in over 600 years, which they followed up by replacing him with the first-ever pope to come from the American continent: Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina, who recently assumed as Pope Francis I. After millennia of almost exclusively European popes, the church appears to finally be getting with the times, recognizing that the majority of their faithful live in South America. At this rate, it will only be 300 more years until they accept the use of condoms.
What does all this have to do with urban transportation? It just so happens that Pope Frankie made headlines, especially in the English speaking press, for his frequent use of public transportation while serving as cardinal in Buenos Aires. The general public is left to imagine that Bergoglio’s namesake, the famously humble Francis of Assisi known for his ragtag (or vintage?) attire, would probably do the same had he been alive during modern times. In the midst of perennial scandals and declining membership in the old world, it’s a perfect bit of optics to stir up loyalty in the faithful. But is there more to it than that? Bergoglio is almost certainly not going to forego his hard earned pope mobile privileges, but there are still other ways he can promote public transportation.
I was in Buenos Aires when the news broke, and there’s no doubt that while other countries such as Chile and England mocked him as “the next hand of God” and other Maradona-based memes, Argentines were proud to have produced the next pope, despite the disappointment of some over the now famous controversy he was involved in during Argentina’s dark dictatorship years. A recent survey showed that roughly 80% of Argentines felt either “pride” or “happiness” about the new pope. Despite this, the fact that Bergoglio took public transit all the time was largely neglected in the Argentine press. His now famous biography, The Jesuit, features little more than a photo of him in the Buenos Aires subway. When I asked to see a copy of that book in a local book store, the store owner went so far as to tell me that even for important public figures in Argentina, including senators and house representatives, taking the bus is not all that uncommon. Which all goes to show how right I was with my bus article from last year. If I were any more infallible, I’d be the pope!
Historically, the church has a somewhat mixed view on the practice of designing and building cities in general. Some in the church (and some outside the church too) use the biblical example of Sodom and Gomorrah as something of a field manual for urban development. In other words, cities are inherently wicked and sinful, not to mention hotbeds of homosexuality, and the best thing to do is just wait around for them to be smoten by God into a steaming crater. Conversely, others in the church, particularly during the middle ages, have at times sought to structure cities in a productive way, creating central public squares – that naturally are right next to the central church. In actual fact, today’s pope doesn’t have any direct control over transportation policy anywhere, other than being able to tell the driver of the pope mobile where to go. But there’s plenty to indicate that he does care about alleviating the ills of urban poverty. In Buenos Aires, he was famous for his visits to the notorious slums in Villa 31. His biography includes a passage where, as he walks through the neighbourhood of Puerto Madero, a former port that has been restored as a highbrow waterfront district, he observes that a meal there costs the same as the income of one resident of Villa 31 for an entire week.

If the pope is serious about making things better in general for cities around the world, he doesn’t have to look any further than the buses and trains he used to take in his old stomping grounds. By encouraging the faithful to push for better transportation options in their communities, he’ll be making the world a better place. And while he’s at it, he may want to think about lightening up on birth control and gay marriage too.

Translation - French Le Pape François: une ère nouvelle des transports en commun?
C’est la saison des premières pour l’Église catholique qui a récemment connu sa première démission du pape en 600 ans. Cette démission s’en est suivie par la nomination du premier pape provenant du continent américain, Jorge Mario Bergoglio d’Argentine, qui a choisi le nom de François 1er. Après des millénaires de papes presque exclusivement européens, l’Église semble finalement évoluer en reconnaissant que la majorité de ses fidèles se trouvent en Amérique du Sud. Si cela continue au même rythme, on verra l’acceptation des préservatifs dans 300 ans.
Qu’est-ce que tout cela a à voir avec les transports collectifs? Il s’avère que Frankie a fait la une, surtout dans la presse anglophone, pour son utilisation fréquente du transport en commun alors qu’il était cardinal à Buenos Aires. Le public s’imagine que son homonyme, l’humble Saint François d’Assise, connu pour ses vêtements piteux (ou classiques?), ferait probablement la même chose s’il avait vécu de nos jours. En ce temps des scandales perpétuels et du déclin du nombre de croyants dans l’Ancien Monde, c’est une excellente façon de stimuler la loyauté des fidèles. Cela ne cacherait-il pas autre chose? Bergoglio ne renoncera surement pas à ses privilèges de papemobile, mais il peut promouvoir le transport en commun d’une autre manière.
J’étais à Buenos Aires quand la nouvelle a éclaté. Alors que certains pays comme le Chili et l’Angleterre se moquaient de « la nouvelle main de Dieu » par des mêmes inspirés de Diego Maradona, les Argentins étaient sans aucun doute fiers que le nouveau pape soit l’un des leurs, malgré la déception de certains à l’égard de la controverse, maintenant bien connue, à laquelle il a été mêlé durant les sombres années de dictature en Argentine. Un sondage récent indique qu’environ 80 % de la population argentine a ressenti de la « fierté » ou de la « joie » au sujet du nouveau pape. Cependant, le fait que Bergoglio utilisaient les transports en commun a été grandement ignoré par la presse argentine. À peine plus d’une photo le montrant à bord d’un métro de Buenos Aires ne figure dans sa fameuse biographie, Le jésuite. Quand j’ai demandé une copie de ce livre dans une librairie du coin, le propriétaire est allé jusqu’à me dire que ce n’est pas inhabituel de prendre l’autobus, même pour des personnalités argentines, comme les sénateurs et les membres de la Chambre des représentants. Tout cela contribue à me donner raison pour mon article de l’an dernier sur l’autobus. Un peu plus infaillible et ce serait moi le pape!
Historiquement, l’Église a toujours possèdé une vision contradictoire au sujet du design et de la construction des villes en général. Certains au sein de l’Église (et d’autres à l’extérieur) utilisent l’exemple biblique de Sodome et Gomorrhe comme une sorte de manuel de campagne pour le développement urbain. En d’autres mots, les villes sont, par nature, des endroits pernicieux et immoraux, sans oublier des foyers d’homosexualité, et la meilleure chose à faire est d’attendre que Dieu n’en fasse des cratères fumants. Par contre, d’autres personnes au sein de l’Église, en particulier au Moyen Âge, ont quelquefois cherché à structurer les villes de manière productive par la création de places publiques, naturellement près de l’église. De nos jours, le pape n’a en fait aucun contrôle direct sur les politiques de transport, à moins que ce ne soit pour dire à son chauffeur où aller, mais tout indique que le soulagement des malheurs de la pauvreté urbaine lui importent. À Buenos Aires, il est reconnu pour ses visites des taudis notoires de la Villa 31. Sa biographie compte un passage où, alors qu’il marche dans Puerto Madero, un ancien port réformé en quartier intellectuel en bord de mer, il remarque qu’un seul repas y coûte autant que le salaire hebdomadaire d’un résident des bidonvilles.

Si le pape veut sérieusement améliorer les villes dans le monde, il n’a pas à regarder plus loin que les autobus et les trains qu’ils prenaient dans son quartier. En encourageant les croyants à faire pression pour de meilleurs transports en commun dans leurs communautés, il créera un monde meilleur. Pendant qu’il y est, il pourrait peut-être penser à assouplir ses positions sur le contrôle des naissances et le mariage homosexuel.

Hi. I am Jacinthe. I am French Canadian. I obtained a master's degree in translation from English to French at Université Laval in 2014. I have since been a freelance translator for several companies (e.g. Version Internationale, LocTeam, ITC Global Translations, Translated, Gengo, ...). I have translated professional and technical texts of a wide variety: advertising, marketing, electronics and human resource projects, user's manuals, and software.
