I don't have a day that is typically slow, Sep 14, 2020

but more often than not the end of the week is quieter, though last week, after two months of intense work, was very slow until… Friday! Usually, new jobs come early or mid-week, but there’s no rule and I have no qualms about working weekends when the need arises.

I don't have a typically slow day Sep 14, 2020

Any day of the week, sometimes even including the weekends, can be quite busy. The slower days are spread throughout the week, so there's no specific day with a little more free time. And this free time can be used for other things, e. g. networking or any other admin work.

I claim to provide service 24-7, and Saturday and Sunday are probably the days I'm least likely to receive any requests. Apart from that, I imagine that my job involves as many ups and downs as any other freelance translator. Feast and famine are par for the course.

While working in-house, I noticed that I was often twiddling my thumbs on a Monday morning, and there was no point asking the PMs if they had anything for me to translate because they were all at a meeting, and even if they weren't at their meeting, the clients were all at a meeting. I get the impression that all French offices are in a meeting on Monday morning! Then going freelance, I don't think it's changed much, although I'm aware that confirmation bias may be at play here.

Anyway, when I was asked to teach at my translation school, I said OK provided it was on Monday morning. Anything that does need doing for Monday morning can be got out of the way at the weekend, so that's the least problematic moment.

Monday mornings Sep 14, 2020

question "What's your slowest working day of the week?".

answer:

Unless I'm already busy on something, Monday mornings are the quietest time for new jobs to come in. That's because on a Monday morning, nobody in Italy (where all my work comes from) has written anything that requires translation - unless they were working over the weekend, which is unlikely.

Some weeks are busy and some are not Sep 14, 2020

These past 2 weeks have been incredibly slow, which gave me the opportunity to apply for jobs, as opposed to July when I had almost no time to eat.

Monday is the quietest day for me, as most work tends to come in later in the week.

Usually Friday Sep 14, 2020

Sometimes Monday is a bit slow. The midweek is usually busiest. I don't often get a lot on Friday.

No particular day Sep 14, 2020

Since the jobs I receive are usually quite long, I give myself a daily quota across the week, including weekends.

Why indundate us with polls? Sep 14, 2020

I'm tired of these polls.

Lots of people having a hard time even making it. And you're worried about the slow days.

Happy to say that I have work everyday, but I choose to negotiate later deadlines and make my own hours whenever possible (90% of the time). For example I give myself a day off on Friday’s, and work at half speed (at the very most) on weekends. Monday mornings are either from a prior week commitment or I get something first thing in the morning. So call it a four day work week, barring emergencies and personal projects!

Slowest working day? Sep 15, 2020

No Idea, but I do know the slowest working TIME of the day, at night when I am sleeping.

Could the polls please come up with some sensible questions, focused on the translation business (Proz = a translator platform????) in stead of this kind of nonsense? (although I must say, I have seen worse questions).
