French term

en l'étude et en brevet

French to English Law/Patents Law (general)
This comes from the end of a document that seemingly grants custody of a child from the office of a Notaire in Haiti.

"Fait et passé a XXXX, en l'Etude et en Brevet"

I get the "en l'Étude" as "in our Offices" but stumped by the "en Brevet" means in this instance.

neutral Andrew Bramhall : 'recordation' isn't a word I've come across before.//True Daryo, but if you ain't heard of 'em by age 66 you're entitled to assume they may be a bit niche, and not exactly common currency;

Try looking it up then, preferably in a business or legal dictionary
agree Daryo : You can't argue against relevant references just because you never heard of them before.

at our office; original handed to the parties

The references are generally in line with Allegro Trans' suggestion/ Black's definition but make it clearer that the original document is passed to the parties (the notary may keep a record but not the original).

neutral AllegroTrans : Yes, but I do not think either answer was correct - as they did not deal with "en brevet" which has a specific meaning

Les actes en brevet

Certains actes (par exemple les procurations et les actes respectueux) sont dits « en brevet » : ils figurent sur le répertoire des actes du notaire, mais leur original est remis à la partie concernée et devient donc un document privé.
