Discussion

Yasser El Helw May 16, 2006:
The word "فرط " would be misunderstood by most Egyptians because in Egypt "فرط " cigarettes means cigarettes that are sold off an open pack, but in Arabic it means to destroy something between one's fingers.
Good-luck
Nesrin May 16, 2006:
Fair enough, Michael! Anyway, you have a lot of options to choose from in the answers to شاي سايب. The context this time is clearer though, as it's definitely unbranded and unpackaged tea this time.
ahmadwadan.com May 16, 2006:
Same an شاي سايب as Nesrin answered before.
Michael McCain (X) (asker) May 16, 2006:
Actually, they might be the same since the terminology in the source texts is not necessarily consistent and since the source texts come from different countries.
Nesrin May 16, 2006:
Aaaah - if you had asked that question right after your شاي سايب question, you would have gotten far less answers on that first one!! Obviously, a lot of people thought both were one and the same...

loose bulk tea

this was just my argument here (in response to your elarier Q on "سايب"): http://www.proz.com/kudoz/1357113

there is packed unbagged tea, and unpacked unbranded one. yet the context you provide proves to be inconsistent since the last phrase associates "فرط" (i.e. loose bulk") with "باكيت" (packet). it happens that this term is very specific here in Egypt, when gorceries are sold "فرط" (or most commnly "فلْت/فالْت"), it means they are loose, unbranded, and unpacked. as Yasser El Helw noted above, cigarettes are the only exception, for there is no producer for unpacked cigarettes, some smokers (for many reasons) just used to buy a certain number of cigarettes.

"dust tea" is another plausible option that we didn't discuss.

Fannings

Your term refers to the size of tea particles not to the fact that it is packed or unpacked. فرط refers to مفروط , i.e., worthless destroyed remains. The فرط/بودرة
proves my point.
