Greetings,

Please see:
http://el.wikipedia.org/wiki/Δερβέναγας

Is it at all possible that, during the days of the Ottoman Empire, Τουρκαλβανός was the general term for any Muslim native to Greece?

Presumably no Muslim would have been described as Έλληνας as most Greeks living in those times would have considered it impossible to be Greek and Muslim.

Perhaps these Τουρκαλβανοί even despised Greek as an “infidel” language and tended to bring up their children speaking Turkish or Albanian? (Even today, I believe, most Albanians are nominally Muslim, so perhaps that meant that the language spoken by them was more acceptable).

All the best,

Simon

Turko-Albanian

It does seem to be a bit controversial.
Peer comment(s):

agree Ivi Rocou : Turko-Albanian was not the general term for any Muslim native to Greece during the days of the Ottoman Empire. Often, the term was used to describe the Arvanites. It is controversial.
