Συγγνώμη που ζήτησα τεκμηρίωση. Σκέφτηκα μήπως δεν φτάνει σε κάποιους πώς μιλάμε εμείς με τους Άγγλους αλλά θέλουν να δουν και το πώς μιλάνε οι Άγγλοι στο κοινό, όταν εκτίθενται στον γραπτό λόγο.

Ah!! now I get it. You confused ' to be sold' with the PROBABLE meaning that it might mean hat ' HE is to be sold'. Far from the truth.
The sequence of the meaning is that ' The Insured should buy INSURANCE and not be sold INSURANCE'. As I said previously, it is understood that the 'Insured' buys Insurance and not potatos, I said. As in the Greek expression, the word Insurance, in the speech, is left out. So, what you get is THE INSURED SHOULD BUY, NOT BE SOLD(to).
Ας το πούμε στα Ελληνικά, -Ο ΑΣΦΑΛΙΣΜΕΝΟΣ ΠΡΕΠΕΙ ΝΑ ΑΓΟΡΟΡΑΖΕΙ ΑΣΦΑΛΕΙΑ ΟΧΙ ΝΑ ΤΟΥ ΠΟΥΛΟΥΝ ΑΣΦΑΛΕΙΑ. Βγάλε το 'ΑΣΦΑΛΕΙΑ' και τι σου μένει;;; Το ίδιο και στα Αγγλικά, Δηλ. 'τα ευκόλως εννοούμενα παραλείπονται'. Για να μη συγχύζονται οι 'περαστικοί', ας το βάλομε 'ετσι,
*ΤΗΕ INSURED SHOULD BUY NOT BE SOLD TO* να βάλει και το 'to', αν θέλει, για να πειθονται και οι 'περαστικοί '
Τί τεκμηρίωση; 60 χρόνια στην Αγγλία, έτσι μιλάω με τους 'Αγγλους.

Πρέπει ωστόσο, transphy, να πείσεις την κοπέλα που ρωτάει αλλά και τον περαστικό που θα τα δει αυτά, ότι υπάρχουν κι άλλοι που δεν φοβούνται ότι "the insured should not be sold" ΔΕΝ σημαίνει ότι ο ίδιος ο ασφαλισμένος δεν πρέπει να πουληθεί (π.χ. στο σκλαβοπάζαρο). Στα δικά μου αγγλικά, αυτή είναι η μοναδική απόδοση της πρότασής σου. Έχεις κάποια τεκμηρίωση (εγώ κατέθεσα τη δική μου) που να λέει τα ίδια με σένα;

I have 'Royal flush!!' I was in Sales, for years, myself. I stick to my SHORT AND SWEET VERSION. One does not have to repeat what the 'Insured' is buying. Obviously, not potatos. So, why say it. Νόμιζα ότι "Λακωνικά'' είναι Ελληνική παροιμία!!
Δεν είπα, όμως, ότι το πως το είπες εσύ είναι λάθος. Είναι ορθό αλλά με πολλα λογια. Όταν βγάλεις τη λέξη 'policy' (που δεν το βρίσκω ορθό) κοίταξε τι απομένει. Μετά, το '... not have a policy sold to him' is long for saying '.........not be sold'. So, read mine as, **THE INSURED SHOULD BUY('insurance', left out as is inferred), NOT BE SOLD, ('Insurance', inferred, which is short for ''not have sold to him''). There's my card!! SHORT AND SWEET. Furthermore, just because a blogger created a precedent I should follow!!

'One should buy, not be sold', is a common expression in the world of buying. It's meaning is, *** buy something that you want, not have something sold to you (probably under pressure) that you might not even want.
In this case it says, 'Ασφαλισμένος'='Insured', which is an inference that he/she buys some type of Insurance and nothing else but Insurance. So, the word Insurance is omitted.
