There are plenty of agencies who will pay far better than 0.05 Euros / word. I work regularly for a Paris agency who pays me 0.18 Euros /word, my usual agency rate is 0.10 Euros / word, and I never accept less than 0.08 Euros/word from any agency. Nobody has to work for peanuts, and if you are asked for ridiculously low rates, negotiate - or walk away from it. I agree with technospeak: accepting low rates undermines YOUR value, and also undermines the value of translation as a profession. Simply, if the agency/outsourcer could find any translator who would accept such low rates they will be obligated to offer a better rate. I feel disgusted when I find a very low budget project with too many quotes. I am preferring to waste my time with nothing to do than accepting a lower rate. | | |
technospeak, Michael, I agree with you on the fact that accepting low rates undermines my value, and also undermines the value of translation as a profession. However, if one is not offered but low rates, what is one supposed to do? Refuse these low-paid jobs and find a part-time job as a bartender in order to be able to pay for the bills? However, if one is not offered but low rates, what is one supposed to do? Refuse these low-paid jobs and find a part-time job as a bartender in order to be able to pay for the bills? I have been refusing these low-paid jobs for months now, hence, I have only worked on a couple of translations for which the pay was decent (0.10 EUR). THis is simply not enough, a couple of well-paid translations per month is not enough to get me by. I understand what you're saying guys and believe me or not, I was saying the exact same thing a few months back, that accepting such jobs is simply demeaning. However, I was making good money at the time and did not mind rejecting 0.05 EUR jobs. Unfortunately, the situation has changed now and I am trying to get back into business with a new clientele-base and things are proving harder. I have just quoted on another job last night. Anyway, they contacted me this morning offering me 0.06 USD for translation and 0.02 USD for revision (specialised software localisation)... Needless to say, this is ridiculous and I am going to have to say no thanks. I have yet to find a client or a translation agency that pays decent money in USD. I have never been offered more than 0.05 EUR by a US-based agency, irrespective of the subject field of the translation. THese rates are simply too low but it seems thats all we get offered on Proz these days... ▲ Collapse | | | tronni Local time: 06:12 Member (2007) English to Finnish
Nathalie, I sympathize but bidding at Proz is not the best method to get good projects. If you want US based companies to send you work make sure you are a member of ATA, get on their freelance listing database and you should find out that your rates are more than acceptable and agencies will contact you with work. I have not looked for work at Proz.com in years. I realize that my language combination is rare and this probably helps (less competition). Sincerely, ...
