Есть за рубежом такая престижная, неплохо оплачиваемая, но в общем являющая собой чистой воды халяву профессия: «специалист по России». При советской власти эти спецы звались ещё «советологами» и «кремленологами». Главное – комментировать уже происшедшее, сплошь и рядом попадая пальцем в небо. Как-то так получалось без малейших усилий русской разведки, что всякий раз, когда происходило нечто по-настоящему эпохальное, «специалисты по России», пусть и весьма дипломатично, признавали, что для них это явилось полной неожиданностью. И, чутьоправившись от удивления, принимались комментировать – со вкусом, цветисто, многословно...как уже говорилось, то сплошь и рядом делая абсолютно неудачные прогнозы, то откровенно ломая голову: как, собственно, это произошло? И что за персона возникла на шахматной доске, которую вроде бы изучили на ощупь? Всякий раз употреблялись термины «феномен», «загадка», «неожиданность».
Еще полсотни лет назад французский писатель-юморист по этой тенденции проехался: «Обозреватели обычно предпочитают объяснять. Предположим, глава советского правительства завтра исчезнет где-то в Монголии. В ту же минуту сотни комментаторов примутся объяснять, почему и как это произошло. Было бы куда лучше, если бы они предвидели это событие заранее».
Точно так же и обстояло в ту зиму, когда Ельцин назвал своим приемником Владимира Владимировича Путина. Как легко догадаться, понеслось по накатанной: «ведущие специалисты по России» отреагировали так, словно означенный Путин был десантирован с Марса. Словно прежде его не было вообще – не следа, ни намёка! – но вдруг распахнулась волшебная дверь в стене и оттуда появился абсолютно новый на планете Земля человек.
С нешуточной душевной болью рвался наружу крик удивления: «Кто Вы, мистер Путин? Откуда взялись?” Всё гораздо более усугубилось, когда (достаточно быстро) оказалось, что российский народ голосует за Путина, поддерживает его, доверяет не на шутку. Это казалось таким непонятным, таким загадочным...
С точки зрения зарубежных и отечественных «специалистов», в политике допрежь того имелось немало «настоящих» лидеров. Все они были вальяжны и авантажны, все они умели говорить красиво, много и по любому поводу, все они совершенно точно знали, как обустроить Россию, Солнечную систему и Галактику – дайте только порулить и уберите все до единого камешка с пути... Они были привычны и знакомы, на них сошёлся клином белый свет, они только они казались достойными самого главного штурвала...

There is a prestigious profession that exists, quite well-paid, but it beckons as sheer sinecure:”a specialist of Russian studies”. These specialists had other names in the Soviet era, they were called “sovietologists” and “kremlinologists”. The most important issue for them was to comment upon something here, there and everywhere which had already happened, mainly by barking up the wrong tree. It was occurring somehow, without the slightest effort on the behalf of Russian Intelligence, that every time, when something like really epoch-making events were taking place, the “specialists of Russian studies”, even if to think, that they were diplomatic, were admitting, that the event came absolutely unexpectedly for them. Having just shrugged off their surprise , they were in a rush to report in colour, with a great taste and profoundly that, as it was mentioned before, or getting the wrong end of the stick with low estimates, or obviously bashing their brains with the question :how, actually, it could happen? The terms of “phenomena”, “enigma” or “surprise” were coming up each time.
A French writer of humour took the rise out of this topic only half a century ago: “The political observers usually prefer to explain. Let us imagine, that the leading Russian ruler had disappeared somewhere in Mongolia. Dozens and dozens of reporters would put their backs into explaining, how possibly it could have happened. It could be so much better, if they could have foreseen it.”
The situation was exactly the same that winter, when Yeltsin called Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin his political protégé. It shouldn’t be difficult to guess, that everything moved like on well-greased wheels on a smooth surface. ”The prominent specialists of Russian studies” reacted in a way as if the appointed Putin had arrived by airborne landing from Mars, like he hadn’t existed at all before – no trace, no hint, like a magic door in the wall sprung open suddenly and a new type of humanoid had appeared as an apparition from it.
A vibrant cry, full of surprise was breaking from within out of anguished souls in a painstaking search : “Who are you, mister Putin? Where did you come from?” Everything turned much more serious, when it occurred so quickly, that it wasn’t a joke, the Russian people were voting for Putin, supporting him seriously and trusting him. That seemed so circumvent, so mysterious...
... If to consider from the point of view of National and International “specialists”, the politics had involved quite a few “real leaders” before. All of them were lofty and advantageous, all of them were eloquent and verbose for any imaginable reasons, all of them had a crafty plan for solving unanswerable problems for Russia, for the Solar System and for the rest of the Galaxy – just entrust them with the driving wheel and remove every sharp stone in their path. They were familiar and amicable, they were the grease for our globe on its orbit, they and only they seemingly were up to the job of taking the uttermost important wheel the helm...

- Кто вы, мистер Путин? Этот вопрос задавали и задают все, кому не лень. Колличество книг и исследований на тему «Путин и ...» постепенно приближается к поистине астрономической величине, а ответавсё нет и в ближайшее время, видимо, не предвидится.
Не мучайтесь вопросом – почему. Узнать, кто же такой этот Путин, всегда будет крайне сложно, ведь главная особенность Кремля заключается в том, что власть, в нём сконцентрированная, преображает Президента. Она выпячивает сильные и слабые стороны любого взгомоздившегося на эту вершину человека, одновременно ослепляя всех смотрящих на него с жгучей ненавистью или распирающей сердце любовью. Равнодушию здесь не место.Под таким гигантским увеличительным стеклом даже самый простой человек становится загадкой, а Путин совсем не прост. Для всех для нас он одновременно оказался и «терра инкогнито», и зеркалом истины, и продавцом иллюзий, и и сокрушителем мечтаний. И это не могло не затронуть души его современников. У каждого из политиков было, есть и останется крайне эмоциональное отношение к Президенту Путину, что, казалось бы, никак не совпадает с более чем скромной и неброской фигурой гаранта Конституции.
Как только заканчиваются выборы и вновь избранный Президент оказывается в Кремле, с ним приходится заново знакомиться. В случае с Путиным это было сделать не трудно. Совсем немногие знали его хорошо за полгода до досрочных выборов, так что новые впечатления почти не конфликтовали с уже сложившимися.

The number of books and research trends on the topic of “Putin” has started to increase to astronomical figures, but there are no answers and no answers may loom on the horizon in the near future.
...Don’t you torment yourself with the question – why. It always would be extremely difficult to find out who he is, this Putin, because the mighty peculiarity of the Kremlin is accentuated by that fact, that concentrated power within it alters the President’s image. For all of us he has appeared simultaneously as “terra incognito”, as a mirror, that reflects truth, as a trader of illusions and as a destroyer of somebody’s dreams. That couldn’t miss targeting the spirits of his contemporaries. An amazingly emotional attitude exposed by politicians still remains, and that doesn’t correspond to him, not just merely a modest and unpretentious figure of the Constitution guarantor.
...Only the elections finished and a new President elect enters the Kremlin, it falls to you that you would have to meet him afresh. In the case with Putin it wasn’t difficult to do. Only few knew him well half a year before long-term elections, therefore any new impressions have not compromised with those, which already were formed.
