大连一条背街上靠近桥边有一家小餐馆，起名“桥头饭店”。老板很有超前意识，为了招揽外资（？）竟然也把店名翻译出来了：EITHER END OF A BRIDGE RESTAURANT！
上个月陪一客户到山海关公干，发现高速公路上醒目的标牌很友好地提醒司机朋友：“DON'T DRIVE TIREDLY”。

既然人家要的是廉價低質量的東西，給他們廉價低質量的東西也就結了。真正要做得好的外文文稿，那絕對不是待在國內就做得出來的。我們處理高價位的外文文稿，不讓洋涇濱過關，唯一的辦法是初譯後由目標國的在地母語者再行審校修潤。
依我看法，單兵譯者不可能做出道地(地道)的外文文稿，只有切實通過正確的品保程序做出來的文稿才會道地。該下手的地方是戒除文人相輕的習氣，先該建立翻譯文字工作的正確品保程序。任何翻譯人都不可能全知全能的，都需要別人協助的。
可憐的是翻譯人往往不明白自尊心的源頭，不合理的價碼也要自以為盡職地賣命做出其實沒經正常品保程序絕對不上標準的文稿，批評別人不客氣卻對別人的批評難消受。這一切都來自於對翻譯品保沒有概念，沒有建立制度，所以那些數鈔票的老總們當然剝削翻譯人了。
我的哲學：付合理的價碼者得到合理的翻譯質量，不肯付合理價碼卻做出不合理要求的案件則絕對拒絕。會餓死人嗎？不會的！

Interesting! You see, Kevin, I used to lose my temper at such clients. But I know that both my English and Chinese are not always acceptable to some people and that's why I just accept their suggestions, even if I know that I am right. My philosophy is: The clients with low-quality needs must be satisfied with low-quality. Well, I am not perfect and I cannot expect the clients to be perfect. Just give them whatever they want. Even good quality is not perfect. It is better to have a quality pay for whatever the clients would like than to have a quality tranlstion underpaid. )
