Trados hanging

I use Trados 7 with which I have had no problems. Now - and I guess it's to do with the document - I open the Word doc to translate, click on Get/Open and Trados not only immediately shows all hidden text, but the Workbench says 'Searching...' and just hangs there. I cannot close the segment as Workbench says it has not completed the previous request...

What is happening?

Never mind. I have read elsewhere that opening a new TM seems to solve the problem - which it does. It doesn't, however, explain why this arose in the first place...
