Italian term

passaggi chiaroscurali

Italian to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting Flemish art
speaking of paintings by a 16th century Flemish artist.

"Precisi confronti possono essere stabiliti con il volto della Butter Madonna della Gemäldegalerie di Berlino e con quello della Madonna Rattier del Louvre. Rispetto a questi dipinti, tuttavia, i *passaggio chiaroscurali* sembrano meno modulati e sensibili, in qualche modo semplificati."
and again...
"Mentre infatti i volti e le mani della giovane donna e del bambino sono caratterizzati da una compattezza smaltata, ottenuta con largo uso di lead white, e da *passaggi chiaroscurali* molto dolci, con ombre morbide e soffuse (fig. volto donna), quelli dei due vecchi e del collector presentano un pellicola più sottile, e un’evidente trattamento grafico superficiale"

I'm thinking "transitions from dark to light" maybe? Or maybe "chiaroscuro modelling"?
Any suggestions?

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Tom in London

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

I would translate Passaggi with transitions, as you suggested, and leave chiaroscuro as it is a precise technique.

The term chiaroscuro implies a sharp transition from darkness to light, losing the nuances and subtle color transitions,
Note from asker:
I like your suggestion. My only personal doubt is the use of chiaroscuro which to my mind refers to a more dramatic contrast of light and dark used in later paintings. But I'm open to to contradiction.
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : The term comes up twice, so you'd have to find two ways to translate it.
