Source text - English The establishment was the common compound of the third and fourth phases assumed by venal hospitality in a land where every second gentleman keeps open house.
No. 1 is the Pouso, a mere camping-ground, whose proprietor does not object to let troopers water their mules and tether them to stakes. In the first quarter of the present century travellers were often condemned to nights a la belle êtoile in these germs of accommodation, which have now become populous villages and towns.
No. 2, the. Rancho, represents the " Traveller's Bungalow, lacking, however, cot, chair, and table, Thugs and Dacoits. Essentially it is a long, tiled shed, sometimes fronted by a verandah on wooden posts or brick pillars ; at other times with outer walls, and even with inner compartments, formed by taipa adobes, or clay and wattle. Here the muleteers unload; the beasts wander xmdriven to the pasture, whilst the masters build a fire, hang their kettle, gipsy fashion, from a tripod of sticks, strew on the ground by way of beddiag the hide covers of the cargoes, and make a snuggery with parallel partitions of neatly- piled panniers t and pack-saddles. The Brazilian poet describes the Rancho —

It requires the skin of a " tropeiro" to sleep in such places : all swarm with strange, outlandish vermin, which burrow into your flesh, and which make their homes imder your nails.
No. 3 is the Venda, or shop, a decided advance, but not thoroughly respectable I was once reproved for owning to having enjoyed the opposite extremes of Fazenda and Venda. It is the "pulperia" of the Hispano- American colonies, the village emporium of England, combined with the grocery and the public-house ; it sells " a' things," from garlic and prayer-books to gin and rum, cake and candles ; sometimes it is double, with one side for wet, and the other for dry goods. A counter, over which swings the rude balance, bisects the length. Between it and the door are stools, boxes, or inverted tubs. The customer touches hat to the proprietor, and is here upon told to sit down. Behind the " balcão" is sacred ground, admitting to the gynecoeum. The shelves of untrimmed wood are laden with mugs, cans, and other pottery, and on both sides with full and empty bottles, upright and couchant. On the floor are salt-bins and open kegs of coarse sugar and beans, a box or two of maize, piles of lard and salted meat — the popular " carne seca," a rope of black tobacco cui*led round a stick, and tins and demijohns of the local rum. The items are umbrellas, horseshoes, hats, mirrors, belts, knives, long pistols (garruchas), cheap guns, and munitions, and sewing gear — in fact, everything that can be wanted by rustic man or woman. The Venda has usually a room where strangers are accommodated with a large platter for ablutions, a wooden bunk, a long-legged table, and a low bench.
No. 4 is the Estalagem, or Hospedaria, the inn where we shall lodge at Marianna ; and No. 6, and last, is the more pretentious hotel, or 'otel, with which the reader has made acquaintance at Barbacena.

Translation - Portuguese O estabelecimento era a habitual combinação do terceiro e quarto tipos de instalação destinados a hospedagem comercial em uma terra onde os mais humildes cavalheiros mantêm suas casas abertas.
No.1 é o Pouso, um mero local de acampamento, onde o proprietário não se opõe a deixar amarrar as mulas das tropas em estacas e a matar-lhes a sede. No primeiro quarto deste século, os viajantes eram frequentemente condenados às noites sob as estrelas em acomodações rudimentares, em locais que agora se tornaram vilas e cidades populosas.
No.2 é o Rancho, que se assemelha ao bangalô para viajantes da Índia, faltam, no entanto, a cama, a cadeira, a mesa, além dos salteadores e as quadrilhas criminosas. Essencialmente, é um galpão coberto por telhas e, algumas vezes, com a frente avarandada sustentada por postes de madeira ou pilares de tijolos. Há também os que possuem paredes externas e compartimentos internos, construídos com taipa, adobes ou barro e pau. Aqui, os tropeiros podem descarregar e os animais vagueiam soltos pelo pasto, enquanto seus donos fazem fogueiras, onde aquecem suas chaleiras penduradas à moda cigana, a partir de um tripé de varas. Espalhada pelo chão de modo a formar colchões, a carga é protegida e escondida, criando um canto confortável, formado por cangalhas e seus cestos empilhados ordenadamente com as respectivas selas. Um poeta brasileiro descreve assim o Rancho:
"E por grupos apinhoados
Em seu centro estão os arreios
Sacos, couros e broacas."
É preciso ter pele de "tropeiro" para dormir nesses lugares: exposto a todo tipo de enxames estranhos, vermes bizarros que se alojam sob a carne, e fazem suas casas sob as unhas.
No. 3 é a Venda ou armazém, decididamente um avanço, mas não "totalmente respeitável". Certa vez fui repreendido por ter me atrevido a desfrutar dos dois extremos opostos da fazenda e da venda. É o equivalente da "Pulperia" das colônias hispano-americanas, do empório de aldeia da Inglaterra, onde se combinam o armazém e a bodega, que vende "as coisas", de alho e livros de reza até gim, rum, bolo e velas; às vezes é duplo, com um lado para os produtos molhados, e outro para produtos secos. O balcão, sobre o qual oscila uma balança rudimentar, divide o espaço ao meio; Entre ele e a porta estão os tamboretes, caixas ou tonéis invertidos. O cliente toca chapéu para cumprimentar o proprietário, e é convidado a se sentar. Atrás do "Balcão" é considerado um solo sagrado, onde se permite a presença de mulheres. As prateleiras toscas de madeira são carregadas com canecas, latas e outros utensílios de cerâmica, além de garrafas cheias e vazias lado a lado, tanto de pé quanto deitadas. No chão ficam as caixas de sal, os barris abertos de açúcar não refinado e feijões, uma caixa ou duas de fubá, pilhas de toucinho e carne salgada – a popular “carne seca,” uma corda de tabaco preto enrolado em volta de uma vara, e latas e garrafões da aguardente local. As mercadorias são guarda-chuvas, ferraduras, chapéus, espelhos, cintos, facas, pistolas longas (garruchas), armas baratas, e munições, e também equipamentos de costura - na verdade, tudo o que podem desejar um homem ou mulher do campo. A Venda tem geralmente um quarto onde os forasteiros são acomodados com uma grande bandeja para as abluções, um estrado de madeira, uma mesa de pernas longas e um banco baixo.
No. 4 é a Estalagem ou Hospedaria, como a pousada onde devemos nos alojar em Mariana; e o No. 5 e último, é o mais pretensioso, o hotel ou 'otel, que o leitor conheceu na passagem sobre Barbacena.
