Source text - English The world, taken as a whole, has achieved the target of gender parity at all levels except tertiary education. But this is not true of all regions, country income groups or individual countries. Only 66% of countries have achieved gender parity in primary education, 45% in lower secondary and 25% in upper secondary.
A total of 262 million children were out-of-school in 2017, which represents a fifth of the total number of children in this age group globally.
Globally, of children who are primary age, 5 million more girls than boys are out-of-school (34 million girls compared to 29 million boys). This equates to almost 10 percent of primary-age girls (compared to 8 percent of boys). This varies significantly across regions, from a 3 percent out-of-school rate in Europe to 23 percent (19 million children) in sub-Saharan Africa.
This trend continues for lower secondary and upper secondary education, with sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia having the highest out-of-school rates for girls in upper secondary (60 and 49 percent respectively) compared to 6 percent in Europe and North America.
The number of out-of-school children at primary age decreased from 101 million in 2000 to 62 million in 2008, but progress has stalled ever since.
In many cases, girls who are out-of-school will never enter education. For example, in Mali and Niger, over 90 percent of girls who are out-of-school will not enter school.
Globally, nine in ten girls complete their primary education, but only three in four complete their lower secondary education. In low income countries, less than two thirds of girls complete their primary education today, and only one in three completes lower secondary school.
The SDG commitment for number of years in schooling is 12 years. However, in Sub-Saharan Africa, girls who do go to school spend on average less than 9 years at school, compared to 13 for girls in Europe. In some countries, including Niger, Mali, Sudan and Chad, this decreases to 6 years.
Globally, in 2015 more than 617 million children and adolescents were not achieving minimum proficiency levels in mathematics and reading (58 percent of the total number of children and adolescents in school.) In sub-Saharan Africa, 90 percent of school-age girls were not achieving minimum proficiency levels, compared with 6 percent of girls in North America and Europe.

Nonostante questo, nell’Africa sub-sahariana le ragazze vanno a scuola in media meno di 9 anni, rispetto a 13 per le ragazze europee. In alcuni paesi, incluso Niger, Mali, Sudan e Chad, gli anni diminuiscono a 6.
