Source text - English The review authors searched the medical literature to determine how effective and safe corticosteroids are for treating brain injury. They focused their search on randomised controlled trials in which one group of people received a medical treatment (corticosteroids) and was compared with a similar group who received a different treatment or no treatment other than standard care. The review authors found 20 of these studies with 12,303 participants. When the review was first done the results of the research were inconclusive. A new large study with about 80% of the total participants was completed by the time of the 2006 update of this review. This study, called CRASH, showed a significant increase in number of deaths in patients given steroids compared with patients who received no treatment. The significant increase in deaths with steroids suggests that steroids should no longer be routinely used in people with traumatic head injury.
Translation - Polish Autorzy przeglądu przeanalizowali dane dostępne w literaturze medycznej, aby ustalić efektywność i bezpieczeństwo stosowania kortykosteroidów w przypadku uszkodzenia mózgu. W swojej pracy skoncentrowali się na randomizowanych kontrolowanych badaniach klinicznych, w których część pacjentów poddano leczeniu przy pomocy kortykosteroidów, po czym porównano rezultaty z podobną grupą poddaną innym czynnościom medycznym lub nie otrzymującą żadnego leczenia poza podstawową opieką. Analizie poddano wyniki dwudziestu różnych badań obejmujących 12 303 uczestników. Rezultaty pierwszej wersji przeglądu okazały się nierozstrzygające. W 2006 ukazała się uaktualniona wersja, zawierająca wyniki nowych przeprowadzonych na dużą skalę badań, których uczestnicy stanowili około 80% wszystkich pacjentów uwzględnionych w artykule przeglądowym. Badania te, opublikowane pod nazwą CRASH, dowiodły, że w grupie pacjentów leczonych kortykosteroidami wystąpiła znacząco wyższa śmiertelność niż w przypadku pacjentów nie otrzymujących żadnego leczenia. Wzrost śmiertelności związany ze stosowaniem steroidów stanowi przesłankę do zaprzestania rutynowego stosowania tego rodzaju leków w przypadku pacjentów z urazowym uszkodzeniem mózgu.

It weren't like you realised anyway, not at the time, not that first Monday morning. It weren't like you seen it all then and there when Poppy come stropping in them doors with her six-inch skirt and her twelve-inch heels;; it weren't like you seen it all laid out, the whole fucking shit of the next six months, like a trailer, do you know what I'm saying, the whole fucking shit of the rest of our lives, which the way I'm feeling, do you know what I'm saying, most probably come down to the same.
Poppy Shakespeare, that was her name. She got long shiny hair like an advert. 'Shakespeare?' I said when Tony told me. 'Fuckin'ell bet she's smart.'
Tony smiled at the carpet, like this flicker of a smile, like a lighter running low on fluid.
‘So what am I s'posed to show her?’ I said. ‘I don't know nothing, do I,' I said.
‘Just show her around the place,’ he said. ‘Introduce her to people, that sort of thing.’
‘Nah,' I said and I shaken my head. ‘Ain't up to it, Tony. Sorry; I'm not. Does my head in, that sort of thing. What you asking me for?' I said.

Translation - Polish Nie chcę się czepiać, ale to naprawdę nie była moja wina. Przecież próbowałam tylko pomóc Poppy. Próbowałabym pomóc każdemu, nic na to nie poradzę, nie próbuję robić z siebie Matki Teresy, ale taka już jestem.
Przecież wcale nie wiadomo było wszystkiego od razu, w tamten poniedziałek rano. Kiedy Poppy wpadła z pretensjami w tej swojej krótkiej spódniczce i obłędnie wysokich szpilkach, nikt nie miał pojęcia, jak to się skończy, to nie jest tak, że człowiek zobaczył te całe jebane sześć miesięcy jak zwiastun przed filmem w kinie, no wiesz, całą jebaną resztę naszego życia, czyli prawdopodobnie jedno i to samo, rozumiesz?
Nazywała się Poppy Shakespeare. Miała długie, lśniące włosy, jak w reklamie. – Shakespeare? – zdziwiłam się, jak Tony mi o tym powiedział. – O ja pierdolę. Musi być rozgranięta.
Tony posłał uśmiech w stronę podłogi, przebłysk uśmiechu, jak z zapalniczki, w której kończy się gaz.
- No ale co mam jej niby pokazać? – zapytałam – Przecież ja się na niczym nie znam.
- Oprowadź ją po budynku, przedstaw ją wszystkim, takie tam.
- Nie ma mowy – pokręciłam głową. – Nie i już. Wiesz, że to mi ryje beret. I w ogóle to czemu niby ja?
Boże, ale jakbyście go słyszeli, jak gadał i gadał! Że nikt inny się nie nadaje, bo przecież nikt inny, ani Patty Pierdoła - to chyba oczywiste - ani Burżuj Benjamin, ani nikt inny, obojętnie żywy czy martwy, albo oba naraz, podobno nikt nie wie tyle co ja o życiu w wariatkowie.
