Hello everyone!
I was wondering if there is a way of knowing the gender of Japanese first names, i.e. a masculine or feminine?

Thanks in advance.

Mafalda

Ko Jun 13, 2007

Hi Mafalda,
There's no sure fire way of knowing, but if the name ends in a KO, it's probably a woman, but that's not a guarantee!
If you tell me the name I can probably tell you if it's a man or a woman.
All the best,
Owen

Reasonable list Jun 13, 2007

This is quite a good list of Japanese names, doesn't cover them all but it might help you out.

Too bad it doesn't come with kanji.

Kanji indeed! Jun 14, 2007

That was my first thought! Now that would be a very useful list.
Mind you, people are forever using new combinations of kanji for their kids, give them that individuality. It's a nice thing, but the risk of writing names wrong is always a worry. Friend of mine had a son a few years back and called him Jo - and used the Kanji from Matsumoto-jo! Nice.

Yes, I agree with Casey. Kanji would help us a lot. Owen, please note that there are some Japanese first names both Japanese men and women use. Take for an example, "Kaoru." I know some Japanese women whose first name are "Kaoru" while one of my male calssmates' name is "Kaoru." He resembles New York Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui...;)

There is "-hiko" for male name, as you said, nothing is a guarantee.

I've recently noticed that English names end with "a" are usually girl names. Am I right?

Great List Jun 14, 2007

Hi Momoka,
That's a great list, found my wifes name (美愛), she'll be happy!

Now I wonder is there a way to combine the English with the Japanese...
All the best
Owen

I was wondering if kanjis can be written vertically too. I'm a bit ignorant on the matter
