Source text - English You have won £4m on the lottery – how will you spend it? Before you know it, that’s 10 minutes gone on daydreaming. But what about driving in your car and arriving at your destination without remembering how you got there. There is a time and a place for daydreaming, but we don’t have much control over when we do it. Since an estimated 30%-50% of our waking time is spent daydreaming, isn’t this worrying? What if your dentist is having that lottery daydream while drilling your teeth?
The solution
Some studies suggest daydreaming makes us unhappy because we are not focusing on what is around us, but are instead thinking about the past or future. A paper in Science concluded that the “wandering mind is an unhappy mind” because you find happiness by living in the moment. But a study this month in the journal Neuropsychologica finds that people whose minds wander the most may score higher on tests that measure intellectual and creative ability. The researchers measured the brain patterns of more than 100 people while they lay in an MRI scanner, focusing on a dull, stationary point for five minutes. This data was compared to tests on creative ability and a questionnaire on how much their minds usually wandered. Those who said their minds wandered the most scored higher on intellectual and creative ability tests and had more efficient brain systems measured in the MRI machine.
An example of being efficient at mind-wandering is if you can zone in and out of conversations or tasks and then naturally tune back in without missing important points or steps. There is a distinction between mind-wandering, where you think of things other than the task you are doing, and daydreaming when, for example, you are on a train doing nothing and detach yourself from the world around you.
Christine Godwin, the lead author of the latest study from the School of Psychology at Georgia Institute of Technology, says that if you are focusing on difficult tasks, your performance will drop if your mind wanders. “But when tasks are easy and you are doing something that’s not demanding, people who have high cognitive ability can let their minds wander because it does not affect their performance. You may be thinking about upcoming goals or problem-solving and come up with a solution. These are some of the positive attributes with mind-wandering.”

My earliest reading memory
From when I was five or six years old, I remember picking up discarded comics and magazines from my dormitory floor in the children’s home where I lived. They included the Beano, Whizzer and Chips, the Dandy and Scorcher. I read them under my bedcovers with the aid of a bicycle light.
My favourite book growing up
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. I read it when I was about eight. I closed my eyes and imagined escaping my predicament and sailing on the Hispaniola with Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver.
The book that changed me as a teenager
I read The Black Jacobins by CLR James when I was serving time in prison following the 1981 Brixton uprising. I was 18. It was the first time I had learned of an account of a slave revolt written by a black writer. Up to that point, I had always believed that enslaved black people in the Caribbean had been submissive and had no coordinated strategy in their fight for freedom.

Source text - English Gareth Bale, Wales’s all-time leading goalscorer and a five-times Champions League winner with Real Madrid, has announced his retirement from football. Bale, one of Britain’s most decorated players, has stepped away from the game midway through his contract at Los Angeles FC, which was due to expire this summer.
Bale’s decision comes little more than a month after he vowed to continue playing after Wales’s disappointing group-stage exit at their first World Cup for 64 years. Bale captained Wales on his first appearance at a World Cup finals.
“My decision to retire from international football has been by far the hardest of my career,” Bale said. “My journey on the international stage is one that has changed not only my life but who I am.”
Bale started at Southampton, making his debut aged 16, and spent six years at Tottenham before joining Madrid in 2013 for a then world-record £85m fee. He had indicated as recently as November that he would play on until at least the end of Wales’s Euro 2024 qualifying campaign. Bale scored 41 goals in 111 international appearances.
In a separate statement on social media Bale said: “After careful and thoughtful consideration I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football.
“I feel incredibly fortunate to have achieved my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. The highest of highs over 17 seasons that will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter has in store for me.”

Kids say the funniest things, but also the most interesting, smart and imaginative things. I maintain that the poetry some schoolchildren write is better than many adults’ efforts, because a) they’ve never had a breakup, which can result in terrible poetry, and b) the malleability of kids’ brains is a literary asset. I think my favourite poem in the past few years might be one that I saw online, written by Nael, age six:
The tiger
He destroyed his cage
Yes
YES
The tiger is out
The exuberant triumph of that capital YES is pure magic.
A lot of the things kids say are unintentionally funny, but sometimes I think they say or do embarrassing things in the knowledge that they are embarrassing – and just want to see how we deal with it. Or they’ll ask questions that philosophers are still working on.
I’ll admit to finding pictures of people’s kids cute but basically all the same. Yet I will always want to hear about the fun things they have come out with. A colleague once told me that when she caught her child pointing a torch at his feet, the explanation was: “I am shining my shoes.”
These quirky turns of phrase and lateral observations delight us jaded, cynical adults. A friend once told me of how, when she brought along her seven-year-old son to a meeting with a mortgage adviser, he quickly established: “I’m not her husband.” I loved the kid who answered the question on his exam paper, “What ended in 1896?” with “1895”.
So thank you, children, for reminding us of the delight and exhilaration to be found in the world. Yes, YES, the tiger is out.

Molte delle cose che i piccoli dicono sono involontariamente divertenti, ma a volte penso che dicano o facciano cose imbarazzanti sapendo di essere tali. E vogliono solo vedere come ci comportiamo con ciò. Oppure faranno domande su cui i filosofi stanno ancora lavorando.
Ammetto di trovare carine le foto dei figli della gente, ma in fondo sono tutte uguali. Eppure vorrò sempre sentire le cose divertenti con cui se ne escono. Una volta una collega mi disse che quando sorprese suo figlio a puntare una torcia verso i suoi piedi, la spiegazione fu: "Mi sto lucidando le scarpe".
Questi bizzarri modi di esprimersi e osservazioni laterali deliziano noi, adulti cinici e annoiati. Un'amica una volta mi ha raccontato di come, quando portò suo figlio di sette anni a un incontro con un consulente ipotecario, chiarì subito: "Non sono suo marito". Ho adorato il ragazzino che alla domanda sul foglio d'esame, "Cosa finì nel 1896?" rispose con "Il 1895".
Quindi grazie, bambini, per averci ricordato la gioia e l'euforia che si possono trovare nel mondo.
Sì, SÌ, la tigre è libera.
