How easy is it to learn?

Broadly used by my clients, nice features, maybe too many of them
Review by
Sara Massons . I use it for most of my projects when I can chose (I regularly use about 10 different CAT tools depending on the client's expectations).

Pros
The TM management is the best I've ever seen, the word base feature is really great and time saving. The overall UI is rather confortable and it is recognized by many companies and LSPs. It is safe to use and protects my data (and that of my clients).
It has great project management features (possibly too much for a freelance alone).
Great support team rather available and responsive.

Cons
I had a bit of a hard time starting with it and I'm still lost with certain features (and I'm rather tech savvy).
It does not work under Open Source OS and it takes most of my computer ressources so it can be a bit slow sometimes.
I did not manage to make the verifika plug-in work and now I repeatedly have an error message about it.
I don't use all the features (and don't need to) and I can't remove them to save my memory or CPU.

Tool has improved over the years
Review by
Serge Wolff . This tool has greatly improved over the years until Trados 2019, I don't know about the next versions. I like the monthly webinars. They are user focused and have become more user friendly.

How easy is it to learn?

Can't go wrong with this, but do consider solid alternatives like MemoQ, CafeTran or Wordfast
Review by
Artem Vakhitov . I've been using Trados in its various incarnations ever since getting my first agency client. Currently, I use SDL Trados Studio 2019. Studio is a seasoned, professional CAT tool that probably has most features you'd ever want from this type of software. Can't say it's perfect, but it's sufficiently reliable and feature-complete for me, otherwise I would have chosen something else long ago.

I haven't evaluated any big-name competitors like MemoQ or Wordfast seriously, but you may want to do that if you haven't yet invested in a professional CAT program. From what I've read, I believe they are more or less functionally equivalent to Studio. CafeTran is another alternative that may be worth your attention. That said, I believe Studio is never a wrong choice. Note that some of these alternatives can have time-limited licenses (thinly veiled in case of CafeTran).

I've also tried several open-source alternatives, including the most recent ones, but they all seem to lack some important features, making me come back to the trusty Studio. Examples of those features are regexp-based segment filtering, source editing, and in-segment formatting (like bold, italic, or text highlight). Oh, and the excellent WinAlign aligner that was IIRC bundled with a previous Studio version and is still available to me. The only open-source CAT tool that I've ever used for serious work is OmegaT. Despite lacking the above-mentioned features and having a suboptimal UI paradigm, it's really good at the things it can do.

Things I don't like in Studio:

- In rare circumstances, it refuses to save the target due to bogus tag errors, and you have to resort to various workarounds including file splitting and retranslating as well as manual re-work. The best way to prevent this is try to save the target right after you've prepared the source. If this fails, you'll have more time to fix the problem.

- It can be slow at times. Non-essential operations like creating a preview—which is easily triggered by an obscure key combination—can't be canceled instantly. When a segment filter is on, and you've inadvertently crossed the segment boundary with your selection, you're in for a minutes-long useless wait.

- It insists on having its own file structure. You can make different choices but when you want a simple date-based structure within a client folder where all files belonging to the specific project are stored in a single folder, you have to make those choices in Studio every single time. Project templates don't seem to be suited for that use case.

- I still find the ribbon interface a downgrade, like with MS Office. It hasn't made me more productive—on the contrary.

- The free human support is almost non-existent.

- The activation and deactivation thing. It's needlessly complex and can make you waste time in case of a PC disaster. This is basically the reason I try open-source solutions periodically. One possible way to make that less likely is virtualization where you activate all software you need and then cut Internet access to the guest VM. This requires more RAM and processing power and assumes the software in question doesn't require you to let it phone home from time to time. I believe Studio doesn't.

That's it—I hope this entry can be useful for someone in the market for a CAT tool.
