Memory

Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan
Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile happy your days ( I can dream of the old days)
Life was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again
Every street lamp seems to beat
A fatalistic warning
Someone mutters and the street lamp gutters
And soon it will be morning
Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustnt give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin

Burnt out ends of smoky days
The still cold smell of morning
A street lamp dies ,another night is over
Another day is dawning
Touch me,
It is so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me,
Youll understand what happiness is
Look, a new day has begun...

The Best Things in Life are Free Nov 6, 2008

Secondhand Rose (Barbra Streisand)

Father has a business strictly secondhand
Everything from toothpicks to a baby grand
Stuff in our apartment came from father's store
Even clothes I'm wearing someone wore before
It's no wonder that I feel abused
I never get a thing that ain't been used

I'm wearing secondhand hats
Secondhand clothes
That's why they call me
Secondhand Rose

Even our piano in the parlor
Daddy bought for ten cents on the dollar
Secondhand pearls
I'm wearing secondhand curls
I never get a single thing that's new
Even Jake, the plumber, he's the man I adore
He had the nerve to tell me he's been married before

Everyone knows
That I'm just Secondhand Rose
From Second Avenue
From Second Avenue

Poverty Medley from "My Name is Barbra"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBbXbwjiAig (Barbra Streisand)

There was this Istanbulian lady; she came from Istanbul. Her name was Pearl, Pearl Tefkik. She finally saved up enough lunch money to buy herself a new coat. So she put on her veil and went downtown. She bought an old, secondhand coat; it was a rotten color, but she loved the buttons. On the way home, along came a young man named Herbert, a lawyer's helper, who saw her buttons, and asked her to lunch. So they were having lunch. Of course, naturally she had to lift up her veil to eat her tuna fish sandwich, you know. And he saw how beautiful she was; and he asked her to get married. So they were on the subway going to City Hall, when the train doors closed right in their faces, only Pearl's button was caught in the door. Now the train started, and she ran sideways, yelling, "Stop the train! You got me by the button!", in Turkish, of course. And they did. And the doors parted, only Pearl's button popped off; and it landed at the feet of the Sultan, who happened to happen to be riding on that very train. Now, he picked it up; he saw Pearl, and noticed she didn't have all her buttons. And he said, "You! You are selected for my harem." That night, from the fifth floor of the harem, she was looking out. She saw Herbert across the street, having a snack in a sidewalk cafe. She wrote a note. The note said, "Dear Herbert, Don't wait for me. I think I'm gonna like it here." She threw it, but it missed. And it landed on a Norwegian tanker bound for Bayonne, New Jersey. You see, just a mere button. Just an old, mere button that you think was worthless. But you see, it's not whether a thing is old or new. It's what it means to someone. Who cares about material things? Luxuries, luxuries are meaningless. It's the simple things that are basic - food, and shelter, and a few yards of cloth to protect you from the cold. Now, I'm like that, essentially a plain person - simple, very simple, and unadorned.

I'm wearing secondhand hats
Secondhand clothes
That's why they call me Secondhand Rose
Even our piano in the parlor
Father bought for ten cents on the dollar
Secondhand pearls
Secondhand curls
I never get a single thing that's new
Even Jake the plumber, he's the man I adore
Had the nerve to tell me he's been married before
Everyone knows
That I'm just Secondhand Rose
From Second Avenue

I'm wearing secondhand shoes
Secondhand hose
All the girls hand me their secondhand beaus
Even my pyjamas when I don 'em
Have somebody else's initials on 'em
Secondhand rings
Ughh, secondhand things
I never get what other girlies do
Once while strolling through the Ritz a girl got my goat
She nudged her friend and said
"Oh, look there goes my old fur coat"

I don't believe in
Frettin' and grievin'
Why mess around with strife
I never was cut out
To step and strut out
Give me the simple life
Some find it pleasant
Dining on pheasant
Those things roll off my comb
Just serve me tomatoes
And mashed potatoes
Any place I hang my hat is home

I got plenty of nothing
And nothing's plenty for me
I got no car, I got no mule, I got no misery
Don't you see?
I got no lock on my door
That's okay with me
'Cause the things that I prize
Like the stars in the skies
Are all free
Oh, I got plenty of nothing
And nothing is plenty for me

Once I built a railroad, made it run
Made it race against time
Once I built a railroad, now it's done
Brother, can you spare a dime?
Say, don't you remember, they called me Al?
It was "Al" all the time
Say, don't you remember, I'm your pal?
Buddy, can you spare a dime?

Nobody knows ya when you're down and out
In your pocket, not one penny
And your friends, well, you haven't any
Soon as you get on your feet again
Everybody, everybody is your long lost friend
It's mighty strange, without a doubt
But nobody knows ya when you're down and out

Oh, everyone knows
That I'm just Secondhand Rose
From Second Avenue
(Ya can't beat the egg creams)
From Second A-ve ...
(There's more between me and Fifth Avenue than three blocks, I'll tell ya)
Second Avenue

The flowers in Spring
The robins that sing
The sunbeams that shine
They're yours, they're mine
And love can come to anyone
Because the best things in life are free

So long sad times
Go long bad times
We are rid of you at last
Howdy gay times
Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past

Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So lets sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again

Altogether shout it now
Theres no one
Who can doubt it now
So lets tell the world about it now
Happy days are here again

Your cares and troubles are gone
Therell be no more from now on
From now on...

Happy days are here again
The skies above are here again
So, lets sing a song of cheer again
Happy times
Happy nights
Happy days
Are here again!

RAINBOW CONNECTION
Kermit the Frog

Why are there so many
Songs about rainbows
And what's on the other side
Rainbow's are visions
They're only illusions
And rainbows have nothing to hide
So we've been told and some chose to
Believe it
But I know they're wrong wait and see

Someday we'll find it
The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me

Who said that every wish
Would be heard and answered
When wished on the morning star
Somebody thought of that
And someone believed it
And look what it's done so far
What's so amazing
That keeps us star gazing
What so we think we might see

Someday we'll find it
That Rainbow Connection
The lovers the dreamers and me

Have you been half asleep
And have you heard voices
I've heard them calling my name
Are these the sweet sounds that called
The young sailors
I think they're one and the same
I've heard it too many times to ignore it
There's something that I'm supposed to be

Someday we'll find it
The Rainbow Connection
The lovers, the dreamers and me

Pearl Bailey Nov 9, 2008

A Time For Love (Pearl Bailey)

That time ... for Summer skies
For hummingbirds and butterflies
You need tender words that harmonize
With the word "love"

Take your time, and find that time for climbing hills
So nice just to lean on a windowsill
Admiring the daffodils, above

There's a time you got to hold, hold hands together
A time for rainbow-colored weather
A time of make believe
The three of us, we keep dreaming of

As time goes drifting by
You'll see the willow bend; and so do I
You know my little friends, whatever sky, above

I've known a time for Spring
I've known a time for Fall
But most of all
Always found the time for love

The time for holding hands together
Find that time for the rainbow-colored weather
You got to make believe the dreams that we dream
We got to dream of those things

'Cause as time ... as you grow older, Sweetheart ... time drifts by
Oh, willows weep, and they bend; so must I
All my little friends, whatever sky, above

I've known a time for Spring
A time for Fall
Most of all
A time for love

A Little Girl From Little Rock (Carol Channing, Pearl Bailey)

I'm just a little girl from Little Rock
Who lived on the wrong side of the tracks
Till a gentleman took me out one night
And after he'd taught me wrong from right
We moved to the right side of the tracks
(What happened?)

Then someone broke my heart in Little Rock
(Oh?)
And I up-and-left old Arkansas
(I thought I missed you around town)
Like a little lost lamb I roamed about
(You did?)
Till I came to New York and I found out
(What?)
The one you call your "Daddy" ain't your pa
(Naughty, naughty)

I was young and determined
You were probably wined, dined, and ermined
Every night opportunity would knock
Golly, but Honey ... Some of these days, in your fancy clothes
You can go back home, and you can thumb your nose ...
(You think so?
I know it)
At the one who done me wrong
(There she goes)
The one who done me wrong
(Wave at him, Honey! Wave at him! That's it)
The one who done me wrong in Little Rock

I would think for a kid from a small street, you know you have done very well in Wall Street
(Well, yes)
Tell me, I always wondered, but did you really own all of that stuff? Whoo-whee!

Well, now that I'm known in the biggest banks
(Well, I didn't know that)
I'm a-goin' back home and give my thanks
(To who? Or you did, to whom?)
To the one who done me wrong
(There she goes again. There she goes)
The one who done me wrong
(Wave at him, Darlin'!)
The one who done me wrong in ...
(Uh, wait for me, Carol!)
I said the one who done me wrong
The one who done me wrong
(Oh-ho!)
The one who done me wrong in Little Rock

The show's finale Nov 9, 2008

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwkPhRlfxp8 (Carol Channing, Pearl Bailey)

A medley with 2 numbers from the musical "Hello, Dolly" ...

The two of us
Will always be for you and me, the two of us
Will always be together like the cat 'n the cream
For we're in a dream
Of our own
We'll go it alone
Just the two of us
And We'll be always travelin' on

(Let me tell 'em)
You know, the two of us
Our friendship will remain between the two of us
It doesn't matter if the skies are cloudy or grey
We're happy away
From the storm (Aha-ah)
We're cozy 'n warm
It's just the two of us
And we'll be always travelin' ...

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

My, you look pretty elegant
You think so, Pearly Mae? I think you look pretty elegant yourself
Do you really like it?
Oh, Honey. It's you
Of course it's me. (Oh!) Look at the back. (Yes!) Isn't it beautiful?
Gorgeous!
I wouldn't want you to repeat it, but my coat was made especially for me
Oh, well. Now, isn't that a coincidence? Mine was designed especially for me, too. Of course, Mine is the original
Oh?
Oh, let's sit down and have a little demitasse
Demitasse? That's French for coffee. My, you have become tres chic. That's French for ...
I know!
I suppose so. Sugar?
Oh no, thanks, Dear. I never touch it
Cream?
Oh, I don't want to spoil anything
Well, you have come a long way from, uh, hu-hu-huh, Little Rock ...

... don't speak of it. Savoir Faire, I reek of it. Some were born with rags and patches
How marvellous! I use dollar bills for matches. You know Howard Hughes?
Yeah
... kowtows to me
Onassis scrapes and bows to me
Why?
I've got elegance. If you ain't got elegance, you can never, ever carry it off

Cary Grant, (Yes?) goes for me. Saint Laurent, sews for me
Well, my Rogers send me jewelry, 'cause they flip for my tomfoolery
My, my, my, my, my. What a knack, there is to that. Sometimes, Sweetie, you act like a born aristocrat
Well, I've got elegance (I share that) ... If you ain't got elegance (I know all about it) ... You can never, ever carry it off

Now, all who are well-bred agree, Pearly Mae has got pedigree
I hear you don't use four-letter words
Never bother with them, Darlin', because I've got much better words
Debonaire, delectable. There's nobody more respectable
Aaah, I tell ya. We got elegance. If you ain't got elegance
Have you noticed (I didn't notice) ... when I hold my cup (What happens?) ... the saucer hardly moves
Oh. And the way I hold my pinky up (Which one?) ... The one with that original stone on it ... indubitably proves ...
That we've got elegance. We've got built-in elegance
And we're elegant, elegant, elegant, elegant, elegant, elegant
We're gonna carry it off

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

Well, well, hello, the first Dolly. Ha, ha, hah
Well, hello, Dolly
It's so nice to be back here where we belong
You're looking swell, Dolly
I can tell, Dolly
(We got it)
You're still glowing
You're still crowing
You're still going strong

We feel the room swaying
(Now we're going)
(All aboard) For the band's playing
One of our/my old favorite songs from way back when
(Let's go back that way in case they miss out there)
(That way?)
Golly gee, Dolly/fellas
Find me a vacant knee, Dolly/fellas
Dolly will never go away again

We feel the room swaying
(Oh, La-da-da-da ...)
For the band's playing
One of our old favorite songs from way back when
(The band is playing one of our old songs from way back when)
So, here's my hat, Dolly/fellas
We're staying where we're at, Dolly/fellas
Dolly'll never go away
I promise I'll/Dolly'll never go away
Dolly'll never go away again

The Best of Times (Jerry Herman, et al)

For listening to my songs, thank you
For the years that you've hummed along, thank you
Promise you'll never go away ...

The best of times is now
What's left of Summer but a faded rose?
The best of times is now
As for tomorrow, well, who knows, who knows, who knows

So hold this moment fast
And live and love as hard as you know how
And make this moment last
Because the best of times is now, is now, is now

Now, not some forgotten yesterday
Now, tomorrow is too far away

So hold this moment fast
And live and love as hard as you know how
And make this moment last
Because the best of times is now, is now, is now
