Called the Google Deskbar here is the latest useful addition to your set of powerful research tools (still in beta).

Search the whole Web using Google and without opening your browser!

Specific features:

1) Search using Google, even when your browser isn't running

2) Preview search results in a small inset window that closes automatically

3) Access Google from any application by typing Ctrl+Alt+G

4) Use keyboard shortcuts for multiple Google searches, i.e., Google News (Ctrl+N),Google Images (Ctrl+I), or Froogle (Ctrl+F)

The new Google Deskbar adds a little box to your Windows taskbar the one normally sitting at the bottom your screen) and makes
it possible for you (given that your connection to the Internet is open) to search through Google without having to run your preferred browser.

Download is only 430 KB and installation is very simple. Guided by a simple wizard incorporating clear animated instructions,
you can download the Google Deskbar and get it installed in less then 5 minutes.

No need for Mac users :) Nov 18, 2003

Alternatively, if you own a Mac with OSX, you don't need this since the google deskbar is wonderfully integrated into the Safari web browser.

So Mac users thinking about switching to OS X may find a good point here. I actually must say Safari works fine, only suffering from a lesser-than-1% non-compatibility issue with websites only designed for IE.
Just for your info.

wow Nov 19, 2003

excellent!

Ruben, aren't you confused with the Toolbar? If your safari isn't running, do you still have the equivalent of this Google Deskbar?

Hi Michael. The answer to both questions is "no". The google bar is integrated into the browser, so it works basically with it (I actually cannot think of accessing google from other place than my browser). In addition, it does not incorporate the complex functionality Evert talked about, though it does include a couple of very nice functions (going back to the latest search - even if it was a 2nd, 3rd, etc. page of results, and a memory of recent searches).

Ever since I started working with it, Safari has become my favorite browser by far. I hate to have a lot of windows open, so tabs are a must; I need a flexible google functionality, and Safari provides it; I need a flexible favorites functionality, and Safari allows me to categorize them beautifully in a single favorites bar.
Bottom line: Even though I also own a PC with IE, I almost never use it (though I will check the google toolbar to see how it works) - actually only on those cases of pages specifically built for IE.

Have a nice day!

Rb
