I had problems this week with my e-mail; apparently my ISP's incoming POP3 e-mail server was down for 3 days, and I didn't know this. Today, I found this out when I received e-mails I was supposed to receive 4 days ago! Among these was a job request from a client, and I didn't know about it until the deadline was already past, i.e. lost business. I called the ISP to complain, and they said that I shouldn't be using their service for business purposes (although I am paying money for it; it is ... Grr!!!
I want to change my SMTP/POP3 server services to another company, but I'm not sure how to determine if another company is better than my current company, because the term "reliability" is highly subjective. After searching the Internet for a couple of hours, it seems like all the companies say they are "not responsible for service unavailability," or something to that effect. What to do? Does anyone know anything reliable? I looked into dedicated servers but it seems like that costs at least $77 USD per month, which is beyond my budget.
Help, anyone? What companies have you had success with? ▲ Collapse

Patti, you might have a look at hostsearch.com. I just did a quick search from the main page (monthly fee $3 or less, 100 MB disk space, Linux) and it returns 200+ hosts. Many of them feature detailed ratings by users, including reliability/uptime (among other factors).

My advice is to keep your ISP. In this way you can continue to use them for smtp.
For pop3: Find a provider that can give you a pure e-mail service, or both e-mail and hosting services. Normally you can buy very reliable services this way if you register (or use your own) domain.

If you set up e-mail with them it is a good idea to redirect your existing e-mail to your new e-mail address. In this way all your e-mails will be scannet. You will of course still need you anti virus programme.
I registred a domain with Datkultur and paid 30 USD (aprox.). To maintain the domain name I pay 70 (aprox.) for 2 years up front. For hosting with 30 megs I pay less than 5 USD a mont (32 SEK).

Thanks for your advice, it was helpful. I did end up using that site to find my new hoster.
