Valued fellow translators,

I have got a nasty problem.
Some month ago, I tried to send a translated file back to my client only to find out it was impossible for the message to reach my client's mail box. I found out my address was unduly listed on www.spamcop.net. I sent the file through a different e-mail address, using my own website. I had the same problem with another client using the same e-mail account. Since I am still working for this last client, I switched over my communication with her on my own e-mail host. Up until today. Today I am experiencing the same problem with my own e-mail server hosted on a private host I subscribed to. Worst of all, I found out that all my private rented hosts are blocked and I cannot send a urgent file to my client, because my e-mail addresses, hosted on three different server on each of which I have registered a domain name with my name (Francesco) and surname (Barbuto), are alllisted on
spamcop due the similar domain name of the servers.
So, now, I have four e-mail address blocked:

one hosted on an italian provider
and three e-mail address hosted on my private servers. For instance, my e-mail address [email protected], on the domain name www.francescobarbuto.com hosted on Proz is, as well, blocked.

How can I fight back spamcop? It is blocking my legitimate and legal e-mail communication and is causing me a business demage against the law and this is, in my opinion, a crime against the First Amendment of the USA Constitution. How can spamcop go against the law and against my legal and lawful right to communicate LEGITIMATE AND LEGAL BUSINESS TRANSACTION?

Did you ask spamcop why they block you? Jul 26, 2004

By phone, fax, or snail mail, obviously?
Before any fighting there should be talking..

Viruses entered your private servers? Jul 26, 2004

We should take into account that private internet services are not equipped with the necessary resources to adequately figh viruses. Now, your private servers might have been infected by viruses that are now using your mailbox(s) as a kind of "broadcasting station" to push out thousands of junk emails each day, troubling the internet network.

So, first of all, I would suggest checking to see whether your systems are free from viruses.

Spamcop should be deactivated on your client's side Jul 27, 2004

After many problems with Spamcop.net, that can't be deactivated one one of my domain names because the hosting service do not want to - I have stopped using the email addresses of that domain name.
It was blocking a significant percentage of legitimate emails from my clients, mailing lists etc.
Spamcop is not meant to be used in a professional environment, see the disclaimer here

As long as your client is behind spamcop.net, you are likely to be blocked again even if you succeed being removed from their lists this time.
The only good solution is in the hands of your client. They probably do not realize how many orders they miss (if they are a company).

I have read what you kindly called a DISCLAIMER.
In my opinion it is not quite a disclaimer but a piece of fine tuned advertising.

It is not against the federal Law in the USA to tinker with others' legal and legitimate postal communications? Are not E-mails in the category of postal communication? It is legal to disrupt businesses blocking legitimate messages?

Certainly, you are kidding.

Certainly, I can share your good humor.

Certainly, the issue is very, very serious for people like translators who just happen to earn a living through e-mailing.

Ask a lawyer Jul 27, 2004

If you think that normal business practice is kidding, then you should ask a lawyer what to do.

Only a tool Jul 27, 2004

As far as I see it is only a tool, the problem is that it is misused by users - your client or their web hosting services (very likely the latter one) are the ones to blame. They have activated Spamcop and they are the ones who can deactivate it on their site.
