Discussion

Nesrin Jun 25, 2011:
I understand - "might" was on the tip of my tongue too. But reading Mohammed's suggested translation I felt that "may" is perfectly unambiguous here.
Hassan Lotfy Jun 25, 2011:
@ Nesrin's note:
I don't mean right or wrong, I mean legal writing style, convention ..etc
mohammed saabneh (asker) Jun 25, 2011:
Thank you
Hassan Lotfy Jun 25, 2011:
In legal documents I encountered; "may" is used when the option is allowed and "might"in case of option denied
mohammed saabneh (asker) Jun 25, 2011:

"May" is fine for the translation of قد in the second text posted in the discussion box.

You could also use "could". I understand that "may" may be ambiguous, as it could also mean "is allowed to". However, in your sentence "may attempt to" there is no way it could be understood to mean "is allowed to attempt to", in my opinion.
