I started searching for another way to deal with this when I came across the work of R and J J… They were using junk to do art, and it inspired me to explore that idea in architecture. I thought that this could be turned into a virtue if you take the visual character of clumsy craftsmanship in all its traits, and look at it as if it was a color on a pallet. At the time, I looked at chain link fences as a horrible disease. I thought it was terrible; how could people do such things…And I built some buildings that ended up fenced with chain link. I was really angry. I thought it was anti-social, anti-human…, but in my anger, I started to look at it. I thought that chain link was just a fabric; it was the fittings and what they do with them that made them undesirable. I went to a chain link factory and I discovered that they make enough chain link in one hour to cover the freeway from downtown XXX to XXX beach. In one hour, with 4 people working. I found out that in all of the world there are hundreds of these plants that make this material. I asked them for possible variations because I wanted to know what you could do with it. They said: Look, we make it and we sell all we make, we don’t need any ideas, we don’t want anybody to tell us anything, we don’t need any creativity.
