Voici le contexte:

Please click on the locations icon to select which locations should be displayed on the map.
Select Locations
Click in the box next to the location to select it

Yes, I think your original idea was correct — assuming it is talking about 'the current location of the vehicle', and given that 'géolocalisation' is the term used in FR for finding the 'localisation géographique' of something, I don't really see how you can get away from it.

--------------------------------------------------
If this 'location' is talking about the (temporary) location of a vehicle that moves about, I really don't see how you can translate that by 'site', which in any case you have already rejected for other reasons.

Working FR > EN, I very often encounter contexts where 'localisation' translates well as 'location', and I think this is a good example in the reverse direction.

Well, for a start, it is obvious they are talking about multiple different locations for different vehicles; this is probably not a very natural way of expressing the same idea in FR.
Also, you might have got better results from trying a different search: I tried it using 'de' and 'localisation' in the singular, and got 300,000 hits! This one sounds close to your context:
Gestion de véhicules spéciaux - Technologies CDWare
www.technologiescdware.com/index.php?show_aux...
Gestion de localisation. Suivi en temps réel position et parcours des véhicules. Voyez en temps réel la position GPS et les parcours des véhicules ou de ...
But of course, there they ARE talking about 'managing location' in general, rather than a number of specific locations.

But then here's a FR example using 'localisations' in the plural, in a very similar context:

la radio est configurée pour recevoir les localisations des véhicules aériens, recevoir les localisations d'autres véhicules terrestres et diffuser une localisation du ...

I think it's hardly surprising you found no hits for "gestion des localisations" on Google.fr, since it is clearly a phrase that is very specific to the software you are dealing with; it might well be called by a different name in someone else's software...

OK, well my suggestions above still stand in other contexts, but thanks to F-X, we now know what YOUR context is, Asker — and of course it's quite different, so I've been wasting my time barking up the wrong tree!

Note from asker:
Thank you for your comments! The reason I do not like "localisations" is that I do not think it is the correct translation for "locations". I can only envisage it as a word in the singular form. But I could be wrong about this. I have found no hits for "gestion des localisations" on google.fr |
Sorry about that, I am in a context that I don't know very well myself. |

: In the light of Asker's customer fedback, it now seems a general term like this is the only solution to cover such a wide range of possible 'locations'; in essence, they are using it to mean 'a place'

it's not where the vehicle is at the moment, but locations as in "city" - watch the vid : https://uk.mixtelematics.com/help/hmfile_hash_2d82998f.mp4

Discussion
A site is not a location.
The way “Site” is used in this UI is for example a company/organisation is the highest level and the next would be sites. As such a site is a branch i.e. Johannesburg, Cape Town, Rustenburg and so on.
A location is a area that has been demarcated on the underlying map and may refer to items such as Customer (point on the map), No go area (extended area such as an industrial area) or a line (where a road that is not on the map is added)
Dans le premier cas, il y a une phase de "discovery" des systèmes distants, puis affichage sur la carte etc.
Dans le second cas (géolocalisation), ce dernier terme n'apparait même pas dans le "contexte".
