Swedish term

anknytningsperson

Swedish to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
I'm not quite sure about the term "anknytningsperson" in this paragraph about immigration status restrictions:

"Försörjningskrav för familjeåterförening:

Den anhörige i Sverige måste kunna försörja både sig själv och sina anhöriga. Det gäller även för svenska medborgare. Försörjningskrav gäller dock inte om anknytningspersonen är barn."

Is "anknytningsperson" the person who is seeking improved immigration status (or for whom an improvement is being sought)?

Or, is it the person whose immigration status is being used to *support* giving improved status to a close relative (via family reunification rules)?

Thanks

Discussion

Matt Bibby Mar 2, 2018:
I think the 'anknytningsperson' is the relative in Sweden, yes. If it were an adult they would be called the 'sponsor' but I can't imagine a child could be a sponsor for someone seeking immigration status. Perhaps just 'relative' would work here, i.e. the 'person with a connection'.
Agneta Pallinder Mar 2, 2018:
Support person It is "the person whose immigration status is being used to *support* giving improved status to a close relative (via family reunification rules)". But, not living in the US I can't begin to think what the appropriate US English term would be.

relative residing in Sweden

Anknytningspersonen är den som redan bor i Sverige.

agree Cynthia Coan : This is currently a hot topic here in the USA, where some people are calling for an end to so-called "chain" migration.
