English term

glitterati

English to Portuguese Art/Literary General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Popular expression
It's a blend of 'glitter' +'literati'

I'm using it to refer to its original meaning, which is glamorous people dressed up in evening clothes. Here's the sentence:

"Xxxx especially enjoyed watching the glitterati gather for concerts and other functions"

Definitions vary, but I've seen 'people dressed up in evening clothes' to 'the beautiful people' Also 'rich and famous' but the basic idea for me here is the glitter, and I don't mind including 'famous', but not all of them are famous.

Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Mar 1, 2019:
Thank you all! Once again, I'm faced with an embarrassment of riches and I have to choose among many good answers. I think most of them are valid, depending on the context.

For my particular context, I finally settled on "público glamouroso."
Mario Freitas Mar 1, 2019:
@ Sandra Vamos ver a decisão da Muriel. Já tem muitas sugestões. Se for o caso, eu publico.
Obrigado!
expressisverbis Mar 1, 2019:
Mário, também voto em "chiques". Valia a pena publicar.
Oliver Simões Feb 27, 2019:
@airmailrpl Good reference, Robert. It mentions "fashionable" and "glamorous" in the definition. I think the tabloids have a lot of say to the extent that not all socialites, "colunáveis", or celebrities are fashionable or glamorous. Some of them are pretty tacky actually. :-) A good translation has to contemplate the actual definition in order to be accurate.

In conclusion, this article on Variety.com refers to a "glittering array of chance to rub elbows with Oscar noms, studio chieftains..." "Glittering"/"fashionable"/"glamorous" are key to translating the phrase in question. https://variety.com/2004/film/awards/oscar-glitterati-toast-...

How about... "pessoas abrilhantadas"? This is something that just occurred to me. I found one example on the website of Brazil's Senate: " Goiandira era uma dessas pessoas abrilhantadas pela mão do Criador." https://www.senado.leg.br/publicacoes/anais/pdf/Anais_Republ...

Although "abrilhantar" is not a very common word, this is exactly what it means:
Fig. Dar ou ter destaque, brilho; ORNAR http://www.aulete.com.br/abrilhantar
Oliver Simões Feb 26, 2019:
badalar At least in PT-Br, "badalar" means something else. Among other things, it means "to attend an event to show (oneself) off" (see #4), "go out to have fun" (#5), or "brag" (#7). http://www.aulete.com.br/badalar It doesn't seem to be related to "glitter" (or "glittery") at all. I would focus on the ostentatious aspect of it. IMHO, a translation alluding to "glamour", "brilho", "chique" seems to be closer in meaning.
Mario Freitas Feb 26, 2019:
Badaladas I tend to disagree with this one, Muriel. Badaladas (=spoken of, seen and mentioned a lot) is more like famous or popular than glamourous. Perhaps "chiques" or "chiquérrimas" would be another choice.
expressisverbis Feb 26, 2019:
Muriel, nos "links" que publiquei, tem várias opções de tradução, inclusive, "pessoas badaladas" no dicionário Babylon.

Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Feb 26, 2019:
All I like all your suggestions, particularly "badaladas". Would it work to say "pessoas badaladas e elegantes"?
Mario Freitas Feb 26, 2019:
@ Muriel, I would suggest "em trajes glamurosos" ou, mais informalmente "muito produzidos", but I'll wait for other suggestions, since I didn't even know this word before you showed it to me.
Muriel Vasconcellos (asker) Feb 26, 2019:
Thank you, but ... I'm looking for the meaning of 'glitterati', which refers to people. I didn't mean to imply that I wanted a translation of 'glitter'. What I need is a translation of the 'glitterati' concept of the élite dressed in fancy evening clothes.

Selected

público glamoroso / glamuroso; pessoas glamorosas / glamurosas

The corresponding word for "glamourous" already shows in the Portuguese dictionaries, at least in the Priberam and the Aulete Online. For this reason, I would avoid the French spelling. I think "glamoroso / glamuroso" conveys the idea of "glitter" quite well, although it doesn't mean exactly the same.

glamoroso / glamuroso: encantador, fascinante

Aulete: http://www.aulete.com.br/glamuroso, glamoroso
Priberam: https://dicionario.priberam.org/glamoroso

Per entry in the Discussion Board, I'm suggesting "pessoas abrilhantadas" as a second option.
Example sentence:

Babylon NG: A palavra "glitter" é usada frequentemente para se referir eufemisticamente ao glamour brilhante, mas superficial. A partir deste significado vem o termo "glitterati" para se referir a pop estrelas e socialites.

socialite

No dicionário Avro, a tradução é "socialite", e me parece uma boa opção.

Nesse caso acho que ficaria melhor a palavra celebridade pois o exemplo do Lenguue se encaixa. O que acham colegas?
