Discussion

Oliver Simões Aug 7, 2019:
Definitely By looking at the range of divergent responses, a good rule of thumb is to consult the client. That's what I would do. And believe me, most clients won't feel they're being "bothered". Quite the opposite, it shows that, as a translator, you care about accuracy. Better to consult the client than delivering a translation that's a shot in the dark. But only the Asker can make that call.
Richard Purdom Aug 7, 2019:
It's pretty obvious looking at the text that 'compensação da jornada de trabalho em caso de feriado prolongado' is not the same as 'compensação em caso da jornada de trabalho durante um feriado prolongado', in other words the worker has to compensate the employer. The client doesn't need to be bothered about stuff like this.
Laura Hafner Aug 7, 2019:
@Mark I realize that the expression is more common in other languages; however, I wanted to specify that, in most cases, the day for which the worker is compensating is a working day before or after a public holiday.
Mark Robertson Aug 7, 2019:
@Laura Hafner You are welcome. I stand corrected about "bridge" days, but I would be surprised if there are many examples of the expression being used in the fully EN context?
Laura Hafner Aug 7, 2019:
@Mark Thank you for taking the time to clarify.

Also, regarding "bridge" days: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Long_weekend

Making up days off "Pros and Cons of Allowing Employees to Make Up Partial Days Off
We all know that since the U.S. tends to run on a 9 to 5 cycle, scheduling appointments or other engagements can be tough to do without missing work. How though, as a human resources pro, do you wrestle with the partial days off employees tend to take? Do you allow employees to make up their partial days off or do they get marked down as vacation days? Listed below are some pros and cons to allowing employees to make up partial days off.

Laura Hafner Aug 6, 2019:
@Oliveira @rwill Always a good idea. Hopefully the client will be responsive enough to clarify in a timely manner. Otherwise, the asker can always add a comment with a suggested translation for each possible interpretation.
Oliver Simões Aug 6, 2019:
@Laura It sounds like we have a different interpretation of the term phrase. A good rule of thumb would be for the Asker to elicit meaning with his/her client. The source-text is not very clear. My reading refers to a scenario where the employee worked during a long holiday weekend, for example, and should have some sort of special compensation for that. But only the client can clarify this for sure. The wide range of responses calls for clarification IMHO.

Bridge day/long holiday compensation

Peer comment(s):

neutral Mark Robertson : Feriado é "public holiday".

compensation for (long) holiday shifts

I understand employees can only be compensated for days they have worked, not the other way around. In this particular case, it's in reference to long holiday shifts.

"The following are highlights from the 2010 Culpepper U.S. Shift Differential Pay Practices Survey of 202 U.S. organizations, fielded July 16-Sept. 17, 2010:
• Shift differentials are more common in manufacturing and customer support jobs than in other types of jobs.
• The third shift consistently is paid at a slightly higher rate than second shift.
• Holiday shifts typically are paid at time and a half, or 1.5 times base rate.
• In lieu of paying shift differentials, some companies compensate employees for working undesirable shifts with additional paid time off." - https://www.shrm.org/resourcesandtools/hr-topics/compensatio...
Peer comment(s):

neutral Laura Hafner : Oliveira, I think compensation in this case is worker->company, not vice-versa. When a company gives its workers a "bridge" day off (e.g., the Monday before a holiday Tuesday), s/he must compensate for those work hours on other days. This is common in Brz

Maybe, but only the client can clarify this. See my discussion entry.
disagree Richard Purdom : where on earth did you get shift work from? No mention of turnos or anything to remotely suggest that this refers to shifts. Your references are thus just random words about shifts, irrelevant to the question, yet you back this up with confidence level 4!
5 hrs
As you should know, the confidence level is something highly subjective. It's none of your business to judge my self-assessed confidence level. Thanks.
neutral Mark Robertson : 1. 2. The 3 examples in your reference all involve payment.
15 hrs
Quem disse "pagamento"? Juro que não mencionei esta palavra. Obviamente uma compensação não é necessariamente monetária. Veja: https://www.patriotsoftware.com/payroll/training/blog/what-i...
disagree ulissescarvalho : "Shift" is wrong, "compensation" is wrong too, and your references are not relevant.

Peer comment(s):

making up for time off granted on working days

Suggested translation of source sentence:
Rules and methods regarding making up for time off granted on working days that follow public holidays.

See discussion entry and

"University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law allows the use of MAKEUP time when non-exempt employees need time off to tend to personal obligations. MAKEUP time worked will not be paid at an overtime rate.

Employees may take TIME OFF and then MAKE UP time later in the same workweek, or may work extra hours earlier in the workweek to make up for time that will be taken off later in the workweek."

Peer comment(s):

agree ulissescarvalho : Yes, make up, not compensation! Compensation would be wrong in this context.
