English term

make that last slot on

English Art/Literary Cinema, Film, TV, Drama
-You came all the way to Calgary
without a sled?
-I got $4,800. I just need
something competitive.
-For 5 grand?
-I know you got something lying around, Roger.
-But, Irv...
-Anything.
-You know I can't do that.
-Wait a minute, Roger.
-Remember when you were desperate to make that last slot on the '68 Grenoble team?
-And you pleaded with me to talk to Kurt?
-Did I say, "Sorry, Roger, I can't do it"?

Does he mean the last qualifying games to be able to play in Grenoble, France?
And what's a Grenoble team?
Thanks!

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

This is supposed to be in Calgary, Alberta. But the phrase confuses me a little bit.

"slot" = position

The team is made up of members (sometimes referred to as "slots") so it means the last person to get on the team in your context.

The team has to be selected so the last slot refers to the last place available on the team.

The team has to be selected and "slot" just means "place"

no rocket science involved and just a simple question of "if you know, it's easy" and "if you don't, it's not"

The "that" in ""that last slot" emphasises the importance of getting into the team as the last member selected so bear that in mind too in your translation.
Note from asker:
Last place on the team? Isn't it a team sport? How can he get the last place on a team if it's a team sport? I'm trying to understand. Thanks!
No problem! Bobsledding seems like rocket science to me. We have no ice where I live. :D We don't know it. I don't even remember we ever participated in the Winter Olympic Games. :D
philgoddard They must have ice. I live in Egypt. No ice here.
