'Most dies in the ancient world were made of high-tin bronze, because this is an excellent metal for casting, and can softened by heat treatment to make it easy to cut the die, and then hardened. The mould is broken away, to extract the cast: this is a transfer-hub, which carries the exact design of the coin in relief. The transfer-hub is then hammered into a softened high-tin bronze to create a negative impression, which is the transfer-die.'
