French term

a reculé au chapitre du comportement routier

French to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
This is a comment entered by a survey respondent regarding his/her views on a certain brand of car. The other responses have to do with the car's appearance, so this comment threw me off.

[fabricant de voitures] a perdu la finesse, l'élégance et la fluidité de ses lignes et a reculé au chapitre du comportement routier. Vraiment je ne comprends pas la direction choisie...plaire aux américains?

Or you could try "handling has taken a nosedive"
or "a giant leap backwards for handling"
Peer comment(s):

agree SJLD : rolled downhill? Yeah - maybe rolled backwards - can't see a car stepping or leaping ;-)

forwards or backwards?//It's true that I mixed my metaphors: but what journalist doesn't?
agree Bourth (X) : Something with "taken a step back" was what I was about to say.

Thanks. I feel the flavour of the journalese has to be attempted at least

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Although at first I thought my text too pedestrian for this particular turn (haha) I've decided that it is just perfect, esp. with the "downhill" - the car's handling has gone downhill might be the phrase to use. Thanks for the brainstorm - that's the true spirit of KudoZ!"

(As opposed to the previous models, the car's) handling has deteriorated considerably

Thank you. I felt like it needed an intensifier in English, but maybe it doesn't.
