Discussion

Claudia Coja Oct 29, 2010:
Also right. Btw, is the asker looking for the Romanian or English term?:)
Veronica Costea Oct 29, 2010:
phd vs. doctorate Yes, you are right, Claudia. So the asker can decide based on the type of doctorate in question.
Claudia Coja Oct 29, 2010:
What is the difference between phd and doctorate? [The] question is equivalent to asking "What is the difference between a Porsche and a Car?"

All PhDs are doctorates. Not all doctorates are PhDs.

Several professional schools offer doctorates that are not PhDs. These include Medicine (MD), Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Dental Science (DDS or DMD), Law (JD), Education (EdD or DEd), Divinity (DD) and business (DBA).
A doctorate is the highest degree awarded in a university. A PhD is a type of doctorate. PhD is the abbreviation for Doctor of Philosophy.
Search "doctorate vs phd", you'll find a lot more.

PhD/doctoral student/candidate

Any combination works just fine.

PhD student
PhD candidate
doctoral student
doctoral candidate

I used to call myself a "PhD candidate", and I guess universities might have a preference for one or the other of these terms, but they are all correct
