Win-win relation.
The programm is known by a big base of future mouth-to-ear actors (the translators of ProZ).
The quality of the English written in the fora will improve
The translators learn a new tool to improve their skills
ProZ could demand some money to the software producers in order to let them be used in ProZ.

What are you trying to say, Felipe? That people on this site can't write? That the editor of White Smoke should get more visibility? That ProZ should become a software dealer? What is your interest in this?

I applaud your desire to improve your English, BUT Dec 15, 2008

I also share Viktoria's apparent horror (I would even ratchet it up a notch) of implementing your chosen software here, in this forum (or any other Proz forum, unless there is one entitled "win points from software companies", which I have yet to participate in).
Take a course, read a book, find a mentor.
If you want to use White Smoke (as one example, and mea culpa for mentioning the name), go ahead, but there is no reason to tie it into this website. Why not have a CAT tool compan

Why not have a CAT tool company do the same so I can write my posts in my chosen language, use the Proz-approved CAT to translate it, etc? And NO, I am not serious about that...

Freeware? Dec 15, 2008

Is it better to recommend a freeware for Proz users since many users are not native English speakers?
For commercial software, my idea is that, it is better not to mention the explicit name for our forum.
For this particular software, why don't they [the seller] offer a demo or trial mode for evaluation and beta-testing among Proz users [like many CAT software: even the software is still error prone at the present stages.]

What about the idea? Do you think is it interesting?

Since some people can't write proper English and this contributes to a bad image of the site as a whole, I think it would be an advantage for us all to have it in place.

U.

Lousy idea Dec 15, 2008

I do not think you have any hidden agenda, but if you are interested in improving your English, by all means do so on your own. There is plenty of instruction available online, and classes in secondary institutions, even mentors, as Juliana mentions. Enroll and have a good time. I suggest that whoever feels the need for improving his or her English, follow the same advice and please do not translate into English until you are absolutely certain of your command of the language.

The last thing we need is Proz plugging in another software, be it what it may be, freeware or not.

I just love the fact that some people can't write proper English on this forum, especially the ones claiming to be native in it in their profile. It helps us all separate the wheat from the chaff. Not just the kind of chaff that pretends to be native in English yet can't write it properly, but also the chaff that seemingly hasn't heard of spell check yet pretends to be a translator.

I don't see how the fact that not everyone here can write proper English worsens the image of this site. Last I heard, this site is global, that is, made up of people who, together, speak hundreds of different languages, and a large part of the translators here work in language pairs which do not involve English. Can we please pardon these for making the effort to communicate in a foreign language they do not master perfectly?

Another thread going nowhere...

It always amazes me how many people do not know how to use a spell checker for their forum posts. I don't believe they would be able to use something more sophisticated (like whitesmoke, for example)

Bad image? Dec 15, 2008

Ultraductor wrote:

Since when is it a crime if a Slovenian fudges a preposition in English once in a while? As Viktoria pointed out, this is a site with participants from around the world, and it's unreasonable to expect perfection in that language or any other from everyone. I am pleased that the communication works as well as it does, even if I occasionally have no idea what someone is trying to ask or say. I can always ask for clarification if it's important.

There are other things which might affect the site's image: dodgy KudoZ answers, some of the silly flame wars we let ourselves get mixed up in, zookeepers looking for monkeys to work for USD 0.00000002 per word, etc., but I don't think bad English is really a factor unless it cumz frum sumwun lik mee hoo klames 2 b uh nadiv speekr.

What about Google Translate Dec 15, 2008

Google Translate might be the only feature lacking on ProZ that would contribute to the internationalization of the site in such a way that all contents, forum posts included, would automatically be available to all site users and members in their own native language. The only problem, however, might be that it could take days for users/members to correctly decode, if ever, the message initially conveyed by the poster without the post in the source language at hand... Just kidding, of course... See more

Besides the possibility of exposing certain users as false native speakers, the most important thing, IMHO, is that the ProZ.com community is actually amazingly friendly and always ready to provide assistance, advice and guidance to any ProZ user or member on any subject, regardless of the asker's or answerer's command of a language. And this is precisely what makes this venue so great! And by the way, users who fear that what they have to say or ask will not be understood by native English speakers can always post in one of the non-English forums
