Only sort of May 3

I listen to the business news on the BBC World Service, which helps, but only up to a point and I have a print/digital subscription to The Economist and listen to the audio version and podcasts every day (very good - I recommend them). However, I tend to go for the current affairs and other articles more than for the purely economy-related pieces. Neither the BBC nor The Economist has anything about my local economy so my answer to that would be "No, I don't". There's always more to learn but I... See more

Neither the BBC nor The Economist has anything about my local economy so my answer to that would be "No, I don't". There's always more to learn but I don't think that knowing more about the global or local economy would help me with my job. Just with investing the millions I should be making from it, possibly?Collapse

Because the economy is influenced by so many factors, it is quite difficult to be well-informed but I try…

As a translator... May 3

...the state of the economy has been mainly a theoretical concept to me. I mean that I've been through some economic crises, but my earnings have never been affected by it through less work or no more work (the prices in the stores, on the other hand...).

I've always felt "protected" as a freelance translator, because even if the economy goes bad the only thing you need are a handful of clients that keep on working with you. So it's a matter of being in the top drawer of your customers, being excellent at your job and "feeling" what the market wants or in what direction it goes and adapt to that, not necessarily to the state of the economy.

Of course these aren't established truths. It's just my opinion based on my experience over the last 19 years.

Yes May 3

It’s what I translate. And in 30 years I have never noticed the economic climate having any correlation with demand for my services. I think people read too much into it.

I think an objection to your statement is implied in your statement itself: You translate financial stuff.

There will always be demand for financial translations, no matter what the economic situation is.

That’s true but I also translate in other areas, also unaffected. People love to talk about a downturn in the market whenever work is scarce but it’s often just the usual ebb and flow in our individual workloads.
