This song is from the early years after the revolution: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7TxSDRqdC4 "... but capitalism won't be coming back ..." (quote) Most people have stereotypes about them, but the reality was/is very different. Even during the Soviet era, there was something about Russia that – despite many things that weren't quite right – made it endearing, charming, endlessly fascinating. I still love Russia and the Russians to bits – and my daughter is half Russian too –, although nowadays I wouldn't want to live there. I left my heart in St Petersburg, where this video has been shot, my favourite city in the whole wide world, even more than Amsterdam (to which its canals and waterways are inspired, BTW. Czar Peter I greatly admired the Dutch and the Germans, and invited many of them to work in his new capital). The song says буржуйская власть (burzhuyskaya vlast' – vlast' means power and burzhuyskaya is an adjective deriving from burzhuy, a pejorative form of burzhua – bourgeois), which is a slightly different concept from capitalism but, ironically, it's what they have got plenty of right now. Plus ça change ... Sorry for the long digression. Thank you again, Matthias, what a treasure trove! | | | Adieu Ukrainian to English + ...
Буржуй in the vernacular usually refers to someone who resembles a Soviet propaganda caricature of capitalists, moreso than the genuine article (Putin and rappers and sheikhs - yes; Gates and Zuckerberg and Jobs - no)... think "fat cats" Any association to an urban middle class has long been lost, with most people wholly unaware of any such original meaning | |

You've left out (I know, I know) the many Italian artists who also contributed to the magnificence that is St Petersburgh. Which I've yet to visit, btw, much to my regret. --- §§§§ --- Back to the music topic, this is going to be a bit longer than the previous suggestions, but surely the late Ennio Morricone and (the very much alive, bless her) Dulce Pontes deserve some more listening/watching in. Live from the Verona Arena in 2002, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=juY9wAZYumg I challenge you to keep your eyes dry listening to the second track (The Ballad of Sacco and Vanzetti (approx 5:28 mins in), ‘And I sense, when I look at the stars That we are children of life Death is small’ Other music I'm listening to today (random tracks), Michael Nyman, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xn1_vUe_Vws Rickie Lee Jones, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXdwvDjxOkM Madeleine Peyoux, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIfqqIuRM5I Philip Glass, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wkof3nPK--Y Merry Clayton, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9YCc1GquW4 Kate Bush, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pllRW9wETzw Quintorigo, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIaYu0ewsDI I'd have LOTS more suggestions, but I don't want to impose on you good people. There was a time when we used to go out for a stroll. And then, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a23945btJYw
