I’ve just noticed a new feature on certain profiles (not on mine, thank goodness) saying “I hired this vendor”. Personally, I dislike the term “vendor” (it makes me think of traders in the street). As Proz.com is an online community for freelance translators and interpreters, wouldn’t it be more appropriate to say “I hired this freelancer”? What do you think?

@Moderators: please feel free to move this thread if this is the wrong section.

'Freelancer' doesn't cover it Sep 16, 2022

Not all of us are freelancers in the strict sense of the word. For example, I do business as a one-person limited company, which implies a different legal standing and taxation regime.

Language service provider? Sep 16, 2022

LSPs can be both individuals or agencies/companies that provide language services to another party.

Me too, I am not a freelancer in the strict sense of the word, but I'd rather be called a freelancer than a vendor...

I’m not a fan of Dear Linguist emails, but linguist would work well here.

A translator by any other name... Sep 17, 2022

One thing I've always disliked being called is "supplier", although I can't quite put my finger on the reason. I think it's the vagueness I dislike (it could apply to so many professions), and it always makes me think of goods being delivered in a van.

What is the problem with the word "translator" in this business? I've never understood that. We vend, we contract and we supply... anything except translate. (I was going to suggest it as an alternative to "vendor/freelancer" f

What is the problem with the word "translator" in this business? I've never understood that. We vend, we contract and we supply... anything except translate. (I was going to suggest it as an alternative to "vendor/freelancer" for this new feature, but that would exclude interpreters, editors etc. who don't translate, so LSP looks like a better suggestion.)

At the other end of the spectrum, I can think of an agency that calls translators "talents". That I find obsequious, and I won't get into the debate about whether it's true in all cases...

Hi Teresa,
My guess is that you can't see the button on your own profile, but other users can. I forced "visitor view" on my page, and it appeared.

Have a nice weekend.

I have been hoping that somehow this feature wouldn’t show up on my profile, but no, you’re quite right, unfortunately it’s there…

Unfortunately, it's not only the occasional agency that likes to call translators "talents":

Yes. I already tried it. A box pops up stating "You are about to publish you hired this vendor some time", CONFIRM or CANCEL?
