Suggestions for anti-spam software Thread poster: Jennifer Baker

I'm looking to install anti-spam software and would appreciate any suggestions. I'm receiving nearly 50 spam messages a day, which wouldn't be so bad if there weren't graphic porno images in the mix (I have to be sure my two children aren't under my chair when I check my mail!)...
I'm worried about losing messages from possible new clients, via my ProZ profile, for example. Any advice? Jennifer

Norton Antispam keeps a lot of spam out of your regular email.
You can introduce the addresses of trusted mail recipients. All the rest is automatically shifted to a spam folder. Do check that folder before you delete your mail. It may be that some mail of trusted recipients are in that folder.
At the end of the day, you just delete the spam.

SpamPal is another anti-spam program I have used before I switched to Thunderbird.
It is free software and works with any software client.
As Williamson pointed out, you have to doublecheck mail that has been put into the junk folder to avoid the loss of important emails.

I use thunderbird, which puts most of the normal junk into the junk folder and does not display html code at all. Though I wouldn't mind about some porno once and again - my spam is usually virus spreading stuff only.

It's not the usual kind of antispam - it downloads the 20 first lines of code of all the emails, then you can chose to delete on the server (meaning that you don't have to lose time downloading crap or viruses) or even to "bounce" - which is a great feeling, sending spam back to the sender
The emails that you choose to keep can be retrieved with your usual email client afterwards.

The sender is almost never real. The spam would be returned to a non-existent address or to a hapless person who's e-mail had been spoofed.
It is usually easy to guess when it's their real address or not. It bounces only if a checkbox is clicked, not systematically.
And it's very efficient, if your address bounces it ends up being deleted from their lists, I have noticed a significant decrease since I use this.

This is exactly what I do not want at all - the (supposed) spam is blocked directly on the server and there's no way to retrieve it in case it would be a mistake (and indeed it's often a mistake!). I have stopped using one ISP because of that feature, that couldn't be stopped.
The spam mostly comes when your email is shown on one or many web pages. I'm currently in the process of updating my sites to remove the addresses and replace them by dialog boxes not showing the addresses at all (not even in the source if possible, according to the available scripts). For instance cgiemail.
PS: There is already a script of that kind on your ProZ page in the "Send message" feature, so there's no worry at all about your email address being harvested from there, as long as you don't write it clearly in the body of the page.

Of course, the solution should be configurable. My ISP uses SpamAssassin, which gives each message "spam points". I can set 3 limits, at which the message will be:
- deleted immediately
- moved to a special folder and deleted after 7 days (I can check the folder online and move non-spam messages to a regular inbox)
- marked as spam in the subject line (which allows me to filter messages in Outlook Express and check them)
I agree that blocking messages on server without being able to retreive them is not enough, maybe even worse than no filtering at all, because you might lose important messages.

You have to overlook the content headers before deleting them, of course, and if something you do not classify as spam is there, just press the icon and mail from that address will never anymore be classified as spam. OTOH, if something slips through, just click the fishbone icon, and the message, its address and characteristics are added to spam messages base.

We receive about 300 hundred spam messages a day, only two or three a day slips through. And on average one needed message every three days are filtered into the junk (if senders address is in your address book, it is never considered as junk, if you classify a message as non-junk, the address is automatically added to your address book- (which may not be such a good idea), therefore you have to view the junk headers before deleting them. But the efficiency of programs we used before (Spamnix etc.) was only about 70 %, while Eudora is about 99%.
