I've been using Trados for over 10 years, first Trados 3, then Trados 7 and recently decided to buy the latest version. The switch from Trados 3 to 7 was seamless, this however, is another matter altogether! I've even cleared 2 days from my work schedule to come to grips with this software and hopefully be up and running again. The package includes: Trados 2007, Studio 2009 and Multiterm 2009. I can't see how to import my TMs or Multiterm, in short I don't know where to begin... Furthermore, 200... I have been using Trados since version 5.5 and stayed with it until the brand new Trados 2009. You are correct, 2009 is very different, yet there are still the same underlying principles. In my personal opinion, Trados finally managed the step to a more intuitive tool when they issued 2009. Therefore, I would go for this one. Especially considering the fact that you will no longer need 2007 once you know 2009 (while it is not the other way around). As far as I know, 2009 can work with all files ... It is much more user-friendly, it has features that were long overdue (I love Autosuggest!) and it is more stable. I know it is a bit overwhelming at the beginning but there are lots of workshops on Proz for beginners of Trados 2009. Although I have to say, unless you are not totally computer illiterate, you will be able to figure it out yourself as well. I know I did within a week.

Thanks for that Anja, it makes sense. Okay, am about to embark on my self-taught Trados 2009 day. Let's hope I haven't pulled ALL my hair out by lunch-time.

I totally understand how you are feeling. I was so used to Trados 2007 Workbench and TagEditor, and I felt that I was completely lost when I first opened Studio 2009 because of the totally different interface. But I really like Studio 2009. I like that it can convert PDF to MS Word while keeping a near-perfect layout and that it is so much easier to translate PPT without meddling with tags.

Just a quick note - do install the 2007 version and keep it up to date, as you will need a few of its functions, which is why it is still supplied when you buy 2009. If you need to align files and work with older versions of Trados TMs, you will need Workbench/Winalign (which are in the 2007 version) in order to do this.
Studio 2009 is a much nicer working environment, though, so I do recommend getting to grips with this as your main tool. Deep breaths, and don... See more Hi Lisa,

Thank you Angela. I have indeeded download 2007 too. I'm currently going through 2009's Tutorial in the Help bar - not lost yet! 'Learning' on my spare laptop before biting the bullet, uninstalling Trados 7 and installing 2007 and 2009 on my main PC. Fingers crossed!

It seems strange and the interface is very busy so the jury is still out on 2009, I'm yet to be convinced. Since all of you seem to love it though I'd like to know why? Also one of my clients requires that I submit clean and unclean files on pretty much every job. As I understand there are no 'unclean' Word files in Studio 2009. The only workaround I can come up with is to export the TM to 2007 and then run the source file through 2007. Is that the simplest solution? ▲ Collapse

Glad to hear you've made progress today.
I never use Synergy - it's more for project management, and the individual applications (Workbench, Tag Editor, etc.) can be run without having to go through Synergy.
Why I prefer Studio to Trados 2007:
1- It doesn't give you problems with fonts, bullet lists, etc. that WB does. It isn't as dry and unfriendly as TagEditor.
2 -It autopropagates any repeated segments within the same file.

3- It has real-time QA (warns you about double spaces, spelling, differences from the source, etc.) so you can correct mistakes as soon as you make them.
4- You can use Auto-suggest to complete long words/phrases as you type them.
Re: bilingual files. You need to convince your clients to use bilingual ttx files because they're compatible with both versions - 2007 and 2009. You create a ttx in Tag Editor or using TTX It (download it for free from the SDL website - it's dead simple to use), open the ttx in Studio, translate and then save as a clean Word doc and a bilingual ttx. That should keep your clients happy.

Thanks Emma for all your very helpful tips. Been following your advice to the letter. Downloaded TTX It, created a .ttx file no probs there, ran it through Studio, saved a target Word file but... my .ttx file isn't bilingual, I can only seem to create a XLIFF file. What am I doing wrong?

as far as I know, you'll have to use Trados 2007 and work directly in Word,
OR
open the Word file in Studio, translate it, update the memory, export the memory as tmx, import the memory into Workbench and translate to fuzzy in Word... lovely!

I THINK I'VE JUST CRACKED IT!
Giovanni, it's much simpler than that. It SEEMS that all you do is open the .ttx in Studio, translate it and then Save Target As twice, firstly as a TRADOStag Document, then as Original File Format et voilà!
